Rigby & Seguin 2021: Capital Punishment and the Legacies of Slavery and Lynching in the United States https://lnkd.in/gcw7y8Bi "Capital punishment in the United States is racialized: those convicted of the murder of Whites are much more likely to receive the death penalty than those convicted for the murder of Blacks. Capital punishment is more commonly practiced in places where lynching of Blacks occurred more frequently and in states in which slavery was legal as of 1860. Accordingly, scholars have debated whether capital punishment reflects a legacy of lynching or a legacy of slavery. Our analysis shows that lynching on its own is a significant predictor of contemporary executions, but that once slavery is accounted for, slavery predicts executions, while lynching does not."

Author: Until You Walk in My Shoes: A Reframing Methodology to Overcome Systemic Discrimination, Originator of the Equity, Inclusion, and Individual Engagement Principle, Former Pharmaceutical Executive, Board Member
Is DEI a bad concept? During the Civil War both the Union and the Confederacy used States Rights to argue for preserving the Union and ending slavery on one side, and for secession on the other side. So, was the concept of States Rights a bad thing? So it is with DEI. There are those who blame DEI for all the present woes of the world, and on the other hand, there are those who focus on the E and I: Equity and Inclusion. So are Equity and Inclusion bad for humanity? #dei #equityandinclusion #deib #cic #safehavendllc #reframedoctor

As the debate around reparations intensified in California, members of the Black community stepped forward to share their perspective on what should be done to address systemic racism. In KQED’s “The Road to Reparations in California”, we learn how citizens in other states have held organizations and communities accountable for past wrongs. The video is a look at how reparations can be accomplished. And now that the California Reparations Task Force has delivered its landmark 1,200-page report with 115 recommendations for reparative measures, it will be up to the state legislature — and pressure from community organizers — to keep the momentum moving toward restitution. https://lnkd.in/g635vJGM

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the reading of General Order #3 by General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 – marking a formal end to the institution of slavery in the United States as it existed until that point. "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer." General Gordon Granger, June 19th 1865 in Galveston, Texas [Source: https://lnkd.in/e5bqjNNp] While marking this important event in U.S. history, it’s also important to know that so much more needs to be done to achieve actual equality of rights and ending systemic racism. As a reminder, although the 13th Amendment to the Constitution ended slavery as it existed, it did not end slavery entirely. That amendment reads: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." [Emphasis added]. Celebrate what’s been achieved – but keep working to complete the goal of ending racism! #juneteenth

One perspective recognizes Lincoln as someone who sought the abolition of slavery in Southern states based on principles of justice and equality. But one another perspective aligns more with the idea that the Northern states, including Lincoln and the people, abolished slavery when it became economically viable and when there was less reliance on slave labor due to industrialization. This view emphasizes economic factors and suggests that the Northern states may have been less motivated by moral considerations in their opposition to slavery. In the absence of an economic need for slaves in the North, there was a shift in attitudes towards slavery, and the desire for the Southern states to abolish slavery could have been influenced by economic factors rather than a purely moral commitment. This perspective is a valid interpretation of historical events and aligns with the idea that the economic context played a significant role in shaping the Northern stance on slavery. #lincoln

Minnesota Department of Corrections & Commissioner Paul Schnell: More often than not, those who live a life behind bars are forgotten after being labeled a criminal. A title we are raised to avoid. But what happens to those who the system targets and enslaves? If you know the story of Jesus; he was executed first and exonerated later. The Justice System in America is the opposite of "Just". Laws are interpreted by humans and vary not only by state and city, but also by courtroom, and feelings or mood of the day by the judge. Many innocent humans are sitting in a cage for something they haven’t done but were proven guilty - not- by fair trial. They are voiceless because society has labeled them and thrown them away. I dare you to listen to the VOICES OF THE VOICELESS. I dare you to take a new lens and view to what’s happening all around you. Human entrapment & enslavement of black men all around America. I dare you to open your heart to truth and be the difference. Find a way to change the future history and story of this country.
