SolarPower Europe has published best practice guidelines for handling EoL solar panels, in a bid to ensure that solar is making a valuable contribution to the European Union’s circularity objectives. The report offers recommendations on how to sustainably handle EoL products and outlines how companies can comply with mandatory requirements. The scope of the legislation covered spans the utility-scale, commercial and industrial, and residential segments. The association says guaranteeing high-quality EoL solar management is crucial for both the sustainability of the industry and public support for solar. “Solar will be the backbone of Europe’s green transition, and this needs to come with sustainable growth,” said Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe. “This new report will support the sector in diligently managing end-of-life solar panels, and ultimately, strengthen the sector’s resilience going forward.”

Energy & Sustainability conference in Lisbon I attended the Wessex Institute conference in early October. I presented a paper on power sector interactions between Norway and the European continent, based largely on time series analysis of the German and Norwegian electricity sectors. I concluded that Norway will not be in a position to significantly alleviate Germany's need for instantaneous power supply resulting from episodes of little wind and no sun as Germany moves towards a fully renewables based power system. Norway can however be in a position to meet a significant part of the cumulative power shortfall that Germany sometimes experiences from prolonged periods of higher-than-average consumption and/or lower-than-average renewable generation. The premise is that Norway's power trade with the continent should be long term balanced (so Norway not being a sustained net exporter of electricity), and the trade must not jeopardize Norway's security of electricity supply given the country's high dependence on water reservoirs for power generation especially through winters. Forecast: ☀️🌞😎 GEA’s Climate Transition Plan aims to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions to #netzero at every link in the value chain by 2040. To get there, one step is financing the construction of a large, high-performance photovoltaic park on our own land in Hachen, Germany, by 2026. With an area of over seven hectares and 18,000 solar collectors, this park could supply more than 2,000 four-person households with electricity. For GEA, this means that we can generate up to 18 percent of our electricity requirements in Germany ourselves with this solar farm. #GEAclimateplan https://lnkd.in/dugGxCAS

Important milestone for sustainable energy

Sustainable Wales – the future is here. Voicing Sustainable Wales support and scaling up climate action together.   PARC SOLAR CAENEWYDD, Gowerton, Swansea   To encourage the introduction of renewable energy, recognising the urgency in society to decarbonise, Sustainable Wales (SW) is posting a brief outline of its support for Parc Solar Caenewydd, to interested parties. Our aim is to encourage you to join SW in this initiative and register your support for this renewable energy scheme. The application is ‘live’ now https://lnkd.in/eQ2qhjiE   This renewable solar scheme, to power 11,500 homes in S Wales, located near Gowerton, west of Swansea, is within its statutory consultation phase for the Welsh Government Planning Department. (Until 25th April). It has no public funding.   Sustainable Wales is supporting this project. From our point of view, if renewable energy applications respond to local issues of biodiversity, landscape and the (legally required) 10% of shared ownership for the local community and its economy, we believe it is important that they are welcomed and encouraged.   No planning application is ever perfect, but if on balance this project reduces climate emissions, increases biodiversity, responds to energy security, and helps the local economy, it should be supported.
