We all know references are an important part of any hiring and investing process, but this is especially true at pre-seed where we at Concept Ventures invest, But how do VCs approach reference checks on founders they're investing in? What are some best practices when doing so? And what are they actually trying to find out? Thanks a lot to team Weekend Fund - Vedika Jain & Ryan Hoover for putting together this great piece and including my thoughts. https://lnkd.in/eQsUriap

Great mention by Brex on how SimpleClosure is supporting the #startup ecosystem. Read more about it below. #shutdowns Michael Morgenstern perspective: "SimpleClosure addresses a critical pain point for founders but also reduces the risk of accruing fines and penalties associated with non-compliance. Every year >700k businesses shut down. Business failure is part of a vibrant ecosystem and SimpleClosure is solving a perpetual market painpoint. If they get the pricing right, this should be a large business."

Business owners and founders in the city of Atlanta I have an exciting opportunity to share with you all. I am leading a free program by Zane Access® Zane Venture Fund called the Capital Readiness Program, in partnership with Invest Atlanta to prepare founders who are ready to raise capital. This four day accelerator which will take place this fall from October 9-13 and will teach founders the fundamental steps to take their business to next level; from building a data room, to finances, legals, pitch deck, understanding all forms of capital (venture and non venture) and more. If you are a founder (or you know a founder in Atlanta) with a great business that they are ready to take to the next level, please spread the word, comment, or share this opportunity. Applications open now through September 15! I remember when I was a founder trying to raise capital and I honestly failed because I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I'm so glad that that doesn't have to be YOU and I look forward to seeing your applications! P.s.: I am hosting this webinar with Ariel Lopez next week to answer all of your questions on the program, capital access, the application, and more (link in comments).

We recently celebrated something awesome at Capital Eleven - the first close of our new venture capital fund. This is going to make a huge impact in creating great jobs and building great companies in Boise- with at least 50% of the fund dollars staying here. Over the last five years we have invested in 55 companies (60% in Idaho) and as I like to say there are for sure easier ways to make money than venture capital investing. I often get asked why we are doing this and why we raised a fund, and my answer is 1) I am a lifelong entrepreneur and love supporting and being around other entrepreneurs. 2) I've lived in the Treasure Valley all my life and the opportunity to help build the future of this valley is very meaningful. 3) The Boise tech eco-system is in its early days, and is undersaturated capital wise. But the flywheel is REALLY starting to go in a big way, and the outcomes ahead are going to blow people's minds. It's going to be a fun ride! Thanks to the dream team for their tireless work and thanks to the Founders that are doing the hardest possible things every day. David K. Passion for change and building a great team are key elements of raising venture capital. Hard work is table stakes. However, for many making pitches to VC investors and coming up against roadblocks, consider how you can connect the dots through storytelling. It's all about the story. #VentureCapital #Entrepreneurship
