President and CEO at Robinson Helicopter Company| Delivering Accessible, Efficient, and Safe Crewed and Uncrewed Helicopters
This is an excellent read for anyone in the aerospace and defense industry. It’s a fascinating history of the US production of aircraft that enabled the Allied Forces victory in World War II. Future conflicts are likely to feature hypersonic aircraft and unmanned vehicles (land, sea and air) and US manufacturing is presently ill-prepared to produce at high rates. But all is not lost… the aerospace industry was quite small pre-WWII and we still prevailed. To ensure we are ready when needed, it is importent that more companies commit themselves to manufacturing fundamentals again. We need more skilled workers and factory capacity for castings, forgings, bearings, seals and all manner of chemicals, coatings and platings. We need more metalworkers and assemblers of all sorts. We need investments (private and public) similar to the recent investments in microchips. Robinson Helicopter Company and Ascent AeroSystems will continue to grow and invest in manufacturing here in the US to make sure we are prepared for the future. From the article. “World War II aircraft production shows that it's possible for a complex manufacturing industry to grow incredibly rapidly. But it also shows the limits of that scale up; that even in an emergency some things can only be accelerated so much, and success depends on what preparations have been taken beforehand.”

The time to begin rebuilding America’s industrial capacity is now. A tech-enabled, distributed, and federated manufacturing ecosystem can optimize production efficiently. In WWII, industrial might came not from a handful of “primes” but from companies leveraging capacity for adjacent requirements. Car manufacturers built tanks or airplane engines. Etc. We still have massive capability and capacity in America that we can and ought to tap into. But we need to begin now. #replicator #defenseindustrialbase #americabuilds Justin McFarlin, Anthony Di Stasio, Farooq Mitha, Laura Taylor-Kale, PhD, Vic Ramdass, Ph.D, Christian Brose, James Earl, Jason L. Raksha Anirveda is a new age print publication (quarterly) with a digital presence. It’s about the disruptive ideas, technological innovations and events shaping the Indian and global defence and aerospace industry.
Manufacturing Woes Adding Pressure, Could Sink US Submarine Fleet Danville (Virginia): The building with a glass facade in a largely empty industrial park here in rural Southside Virginia maybe a far cry from a traditional factory churning out submarine components. However, US Navy officials say this building, the Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence, represents the future of the submarine industry — and perhaps the service’s only path to building the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine and Virginia-class attack submarine on time. To quote my good friend Dayton Wenzel, PMP, becuase I honestly could not have said it better myself… Some people feel the innovation is simply changing things. The reality of it is, innovation is changing things for the better for long duration, and getting massive improvement of critical operational capabilities. This is a great article, showing amazing collaboration between government contractors, industry and government organizations to make innovation happen. #defenseindustry #airforce #defenseinnovation #defensecontracting #defensecontracting #militarytransition #militarycommunity #industryinsights #industrysolutions

After a very productive week in Berlin, getting some quality time with my European teammates and our key customers, I’m reminded of the important relationship between Germany and the UK. As the top two European defence spenders, Germany and the UK hold unparalleled influence which creates a real platform for practical cooperation and the development of complementary capabilities. #rollsroyce continues to position itself as a key player in the evolving global aerospace and defence market. And as you’d expect we’re looking to blend agility with innovation. One great example is a project being lead out of our Dahlewitz facility by Rene Bernstein, Rolls-Royce Deutschland's Head of Defence Future Programmes. In the attached article, René advocates for Germany to adopt a strategy of employing proven civil technology for military programmes to mitigate risks, control costs, and enhance the long-term international competitiveness of future platforms. It’s a pragmatic and logical way of combining Rolls-Royce’s civil aerospace and business aviation pedigree with our significant defence presence and engineering capabilities in Germany. #innovation #internationalcooperation #rollsroycedeutschland #nextgen Rene Bernstein Dr. Stephanie Willmann Kevin Francke

A very interesting article on the qualification needs for additive manufacturing of parts for defense systems. With a reminder of some interesting stats too... - From 1979 to 2017, the US lost 7.1 million manufacturing jobs, equivalent to 36% of the workforce and there are 25% fewer manufacturing firms and plants than there were in 1997, due to outsourcing to low cost countries. There are examples of the US Army replacing a part that would take 126 days for shipping that was made overnight. Fast TAT giving High Value. It is all about Learn and Evolve to Improve, Adapt, and Overcome! https://lnkd.in/gwi_a-wS #aviation #research #development #innovation #technology #mro #manufacturing #additivemanufacturing #3dprinting #advancedmanufacturing #digitalmanufacturing #productive
