What does the CDR market look like today? Right now, the market is dominated by advanced market commitments and future offtakes. At the same time, there is a real lack of projects that are both durable *and* affordable as CDR technology and the market continue to evolve. Some buyers are investing in expensive solutions such as direct air capture, oftentimes to help drive down costs. Other, more budget-sensitive buyers opt for more nature-based routes to keep costs down. Here’s Rubicon Carbon’s Amishi Kumar Claros explaining the current state of the CDR market:

What are the two most important policy asks for the CDR industry? I believe A LOT of what we need as an industry follows from implementing just these two asks widely: ↕ Separate short, and medium term targets for CDR and emission reductions. 🔃 Like-for-like removals. In the video below I explain why. Recorded as a presentation for the CDR San Francisco Summit that was held this week #CDRSF

To ensure that CDR actually helps us reach global climate targets and that companies and countries purchase and support carbon removal, here are two policy asks we need in the carbon removal industry: 1️⃣ Separate Targets. In the short and medium terms, countries and companies should have separate and clear targets for emission reductions and for carbon removal. This ensures that while pursuing on-going reduction, carbon removal is also being scaled up simultaneous. 2️⃣ Like-for-Like removals. Like-for-like is the concept that there should be a physical equivalence between emissions and removals, in that only permanent and durable carbon removals should be used to address emissions originated from fossil fuels given that CO2 from fossil-fuel emissions persist in the atmosphere for centuries. Lower-permanence carbon removals (ie. forestation and soil carbon) could be used to address emissions from agriculture or land-use changes. Such is the concise but on-point message from Robert Höglund to industry leaders and participants.
