It was a great opportunity today to attend a Parliamentary Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group event in London which focused on how to maximise biodiversity net gain on solar farms. Both the RSPB and The Wildlife Trust were in attendance as well as Solar Energy UK and Low Carbon, and it was clear that we are all working towards the same aim, to achieve the net zero goal whilst also supporting and restoring nature during a biodiversity crisis. Key take homes were the importance of priority habitats (both to protect and restore), suitable site selection and that community engagement is vital to get the public involved. I have attended many consultation events where people assume that as part of the scheme we would strip all the hedges and woodland out and leave a barren field which couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, hedge and woodland loss is avoided and wildflower, woodland and hedgerows are planted and often supported by bat/bird boxes, apiaries and more! It is also clear that we still have some work to do as concerns were raised regarding local authority funding and the enforcement of BNG as well as the grid and planning barriers which make solar development increasingly hard to deliver. Ultimately, we have an amazing opportunity on solar sites to not only contribute towards climate change targets, but also to support nature in a time where it really needs our help.

Microsoft has announced one of the largest-ever carbon removal agreements to purchase 3 million tons of carbon removal credits over a 15-year period, generated through re.green’s reforestation projects in Brazil. This is re.green' s largest carbon removal (CDR) project to date. re.green will deliver approximately 3 million tons of carbon removal credits over a 15-year period through the restoration of forests using solely native species, encompassing the planting of at least 10.7 million seedlings. Map, Model, and Monitor Biodiversity on Offshore Wind Sites. Opinions shared are my own and do not necessarily reflect that of my employer.
How do you accommodate #biodiversity in #offshorewind? This is a great interactive study of how the Nordic and North Sea states have achieved that. I particularly like the case studies in Chapter 7 where they cover: Planning - how screening has led to the avoid environmental show-stoppers and no-go areas in Denmark; Avoidance - by site screening in Scotland. Using detailed maps and benthic sturveys to site a project effectively. Assessing cumulative effects - between Norway and Scotland due to the increase in offshore wind in the sea between them. Thus understanding the combined impacts on sea birds and marine mammals. Coordinating environmental monitoring - with examples from Belgium and Norway. Showing the importance of interaction between projects and regulators. Mitigation - in this instance by using bubble curtains to mitigate impacts on marine mammals (see yesterday's post) from foundation piling.
