One of our core competencies is as a Top 50 #healthcareconstruction builder in 🇺🇸. I often reflect on the #meaning that our buildings provide to the people they serve. What if I told you that our company’s connection to nature & adventure helps our customer’s dream an experience we build for them. Our purpose-building experience is unique. We want to create structures and campuses where we can close our eyes and feel our customer occupant’s living experience. Recently, I reflected on the future of "Aged Care Facilities." I believe that the last years of our lives should evoke a feeling of rebirth and accomplishment. Our aged care experience should allow joy and reflection: bare feet on the property, touching nature and the sun, laughing while telling stories of our experiences, and sending off our friends with a deep sense of purpose, pride, and belief. At our company, we believe that our buildings should offer an experience where dignity at the end of our lifespans transcends the cost of the care. Our customers ask us to bring ‘life’ to our healthcare facilities for the wonderful occupants they serve. This is why we are "building to solve the world's greatest challenges for the most important occupants on earth." The NHS is not just about the buildings; it’s about the land too. NHS estates teams are collectively responsible for almost as much outside as inside space. The outdoor spaces are more than just aesthetics; they contribute to faster recovery and wellbeing of patients and staff, with nearly £30m spent on maintaining these areas. Utilising space management tools helps teams efficiently manage these vast areas and enhances strategic decision-making. Health Infrastructure’s (HI) Chief Executive, Rebecca Wark, presented at the Design Guide for Health industry forum 2023 hosted by Government Architect NSW (GANSW). Over 500 stakeholders  participated in the virtual forum to hear industry experts reflect on their shared aspirations and key components of the new Design Guide for Health: Spaces, Places and Precincts. The design guide shares HI’s vision to deliver future focused, innovative and sustainable health infrastructure to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the NSW community. Design is about ensuring health facilities are healthy spaces – functionally, socially and environmentally. Getting this right means we can enhance healing and clinical services, as well as provide supportive environments for staff and the community. Developed as a collaboration between Government Architect NSW and Health Infrastructure, the guide will assist NSW Health and project stakeholders to develop a comprehensive place-based approach to the planning, design and provision of health facilities. Most of us in the healthcare design/planning community harken back to Vandy's One Hundred Oaks Mall as starting the trend for adaptive reuse of commercial space for healthcare utilization (definitely not the first, but one of the largest/well done). This trend has continued, especially in the years following COVID with three significant drivers: 1) astronomic increase in base construction costs, 2) a steady increasing shift to ambulatory, and 3) a competitive drive to increase access points. Becker's article from last week shows the continuation of this trend and presents additional considerations, such as: lets recycle infrastructure and continue to invest in communities that commercial business has pulled out of. @RICSnews has partnered with @Ekkist, the UK’s first health and wellbeing consultancy for the built environment, to launch a new guide to designing, delivering and managing healthier buildings. A wealth of research shows how health is affected by a range of factors in the built environment, including noise, lighting, temperature, poor air quality and ease of doing physical activity. With people spending as much as 90% of their time indoors, designing for health can have significant benefits. For UK housing alone, research published by BRE found that the annual cost to the NHS of leaving people in the poorest housing was around £1.4bn, with wider societal costs amounting to £18.5bn each year. RICS’ new guide builds on its International Building Operation Standards (IBOS). IBOS already goes beyond traditional measures of a building’s performance to include the experience of the people who use it; as part of this, the publication provides more advice on supporting people’s health and wellbeing. This article aims at reframing our discussions about our downtowns so that the notion of Central Business Districts (CBDs) no longer dominates them. It also presents an example of a large strong downtown -- Manhattan’s Upper East Side -- in which residential uses are dominant, and healthcare, the arts, and retail are also very strong. High office vacancies compared to pre-pandemic levels is a common theme seen globally. Designers continue to take on the challenge of meeting new business needs whilst remaining sustainable and cost effective. Interesting take by Gensler to repurpose existing buildings for a different industry’s use.
