Fun fact Friday: 83% of college students apply to jobs outside the state where their school is in. Historically Black Colleges & Universities enroll just 10% of African American college students—the other 90% attend universities throughout the country. Nearly half of GenZ candidates say they won’t apply to an entry level job that doesn’t list pay range or salary (even in states that don’t require pay transparency). Over 50% of students want to hear about current employees’ personal experiences before they apply to a job at a company. Last Spring, 65% of virtual career fair attendees on Handshake were students of color. Implications: cast a wider net for great talent, expand your school strategy, prioritize pay transparency across all job reqs, connect candidates to current employees, and offer a mix of in-person and virtual events. Do that, and you win. Pass it on!

I've been getting a lot of questions about the event we're putting on, so I wanted to answer some of the most common ones: ✨ Is this a job fair? Technically, no. This event is a conversational roundtable featuring young people and professionals alongside employers and leaders. It's a chance to share perspectives about each other and discuss how we can overcome generational obstacles as a community. ✨ This event is FREE! Originally, we considered a fee to cover costs, but I wanted to be fair and absorb the cost as an investment. ✨ This is NOT confrontational. This isn't about hearsay. We'll be using statistics and key indicators observed within our community to facilitate discussion. ✨ Who's participating? We'll have students from high schools and colleges across the Springfield-Branson metro area. This includes international students, Springfield-Branson natives, and those planning to leave or enter the workforce. ✨ The goal? To share perspectives and find common ground.

As a university recruiter for the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Eddie Celis, M.S. visits campuses across the country to seek out the perfect fit for Idaho National Laboratory internships. The University of Idaho Career Fair is fertile ground for Celis and hundreds of other company representatives in search of both interns and full-time employees. The U of I Fall Career Fair drew a record 230 employers – the first time the event has drawn more than 200. The spring edition takes place Feb. 7 at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome, where more than 150 employers will visit with students from across the academic spectrum. Celis ’19, ’22, returns to familiar territory next week. As an undergraduate student he worked for the Office of Career Services. Now he helps identify students who can contribute to INL’s mission. “We’re looking for skills and qualifications, but most of the U of I students have those,” Celis said. “The other half we’re looking for is the passion behind their work. We want students to understand the big picture of the work we do here at INL. Our researchers and scientists are trying to change the world and when students have that same passion, that’s when it really clicks.” The University of Idaho Career Services staff works to bring in a wide variety of employers and prepares students by reviewing resumes and advising students on how to make a good impression on employers. Students can research companies represented at the Career Fair on Handshake – the U of I’s online career platform. In addition to the Career Fair, each college holds a Networking Night, where students can visit with employers in a casual setting and faculty can connect with companies to learn more about what they’re looking for in graduates. For those preparing for the non-academic economics market, here are some thought-provoking trends on worker satisfaction with comp and work-life balance in tech, finance, consulting, and government. This convergence rings true and echoes what I've been hearing from folks in my network. My advice is to explore widely to maximize the odds of finding a good fit. The NABE TEC2023 job fair is an excellent way to do that (link in comments). Moreover, levels are still quite high even if tech is no longer an outlier along these two dimensions. I want to share a recent experience involving my daughter, who is currently a sophomore at a university. Today, she attended her university's career fair, an event that I have stressed the importance of for many years. I have always emphasized the significance of networking, asking insightful questions, and establishing connections with professionals in the business world. I have fond memories of my own time as a recruiter for a CPA firm at universities, where I engaged in conversations with students of all class levels, including freshmen. My daughter is pursuing a degree in Analytic Information Management (AIM), and her experience at the career fair was disheartening. Regrettably, she encountered limited engagement from the majority of organizations present. Many did not take the time to introduce themselves or engage in meaningful discussions, and some even returned her resume when they discovered she was a sophomore. She called me feeling discouraged, and I reminded her that rejection is a part of the business world, and persistence is key. As a Human Resource Professional, I find myself surprised by the quality of experience she had today. It is important to remember that students, like my daughter, may be sophomores this year, but they will quickly progress to juniors and become valuable potential employees in the near future. There is immense value in starting conversations early, nurturing relationships, and recognizing potential talent. My daughter is determined to return to the career fair tomorrow and explore the opportunities she may have missed today. I have encouraged her not to lose hope. Her major in AIM offers an exciting and promising career path, and I remain hopeful that she will secure an internship. If not, she can use the summer to gain valuable experience and return even stronger next year. In conclusion, I share this experience not only as a concerned parent but also as a professional who believes in the power of nurturing young talent. As a person who’s actively recruited at college job fairs myself, I’ve directly seen the benefits of engaging with all attendees who come to talk to me. Some of my best recruits were those kids I got to know through multiple visits. 2023 SoCal January-March: Fine tuned a development once known as the biggest struggle company wide into the best performing property in company history. Austin/Dallas March-September: Accepted an offer to oversee two new developments in Austin. Orchestrated a job fair to onboard, train, develop and build the Austin market. In junction, I traveled to Dallas for 15 weeks to overturn all areas of struggle. Turning poor reputation scores into victories, financials into favorable coins and teams into Olympic Gold Medalists. Austin will forever have my heart. Some of the absolute BEST peeps around 🫶🏽 September to present: Welcomed my 7th new development career wise. 1116 units are on the horizon. Currently in the process of making history. When asked who is my competition, my answer is always myself. I plan to exceed my last. My last boss asked me “how do you do it Nic” and I responded, “I’ll never share my sauce and I have multiple receipts to prove it” 🤣 In this upcoming year, the right people will seek you out. Those who aren’t intimidated by your strengths. But those who are excited to trust your vision. You are more than qualified. Don’t be surprised when old partners come knocking. I’m beyond excited for all things 2024! Let’s goooo! Carry On.
