The aim of the visit is to get a better understanding of the unique investment environment of Weihai City and the interesting cooperation opportunities. During the visit, you will meet with high-level government leaders, have meetings with potential Chinese partners, visit development zones and be shown around leading Weihai companies. Why Weihai ? Singapore has retained its title as the world’s top maritime city, followed by Rotterdam and London, according to the 2024 Leading Maritime Cities (LMC) report from DNV and Menon Economics. The study provides insights into the cities that offer the best policy measures, initiatives, and support for the maritime industry. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO Maritime at DNV, said: “Since the last edition of the Leading Maritime Cities report was published in 2022, global tensions have reverberated throughout the maritime industry. Despite this, shipping as a whole has shown a remarkable resilience.” While the LMC report again identified the city-state as the world-leader, other cities have elevated their standing since the 2022 edition of the report was published, with London becoming the top city for maritime finance and law and Busan leading the way in maritime technology. We had a constructive meeting today with Nicholas Ho, the new Commissioner of Belt and Road Office, who outlined the office's focus for the coming year. Chamber CEO Patrick Yeung, Belt & Road Working Group Co-Convenor Edmond Yue and Asia, Africa & Middle East Committee Chairman Jonathan Lamport welcomed the Commissioner and his colleagues. Ho explained that the BRI’s focus has shifted from mega-scale projects to smaller ones, since many large infrastructure projects and facilities built over the past 10 years since the project’s launch have been completed. As a result, smaller projects can develop business more easily and cheaply. He also emphasized the importance of magnifying Hong Kong’s role as an interconnector to benefit from the BRI by facilitating business and trade in both inbound and outbound investments. He also shared that two major themes going forward will be #green and #sustainable development, and the #digitaleconomy. The Chamber agreed to work more closely with the BRO to help members explore #newmarkets and #opportunities in light of more FTAs expected to be signed in the coming years, not least RCEP. #hkgcc #hongkongbusiness #beltandroadinitiative #rcep #superconnector #china
