Connect what matters to your healthcare goals and plans!
Today, we celebrate "What Matters to You?" Day (WMTY) 2024. Inspired by a 2012 New England Journal of Medicine article titled "Shared Decision-Making: The Pinnacle of Patient-Centered Care," written by Michael Barry and Susan Edgman-Levitan, WMTY is intended to shift the power to the person who knows best about the help or support they need, whether it be a person with a medical issue or the clinicians or staff providing care. This international day of celebration aims to encourage and support more meaningful conversations between caregivers who provide health and social care (including family caregivers) and those they are or will care for in the future. Does death and dying form part of your everyday conversation? Chances are, it doesn't. But we think it should. Maddy Thomson, our consultant nurse for palliative medicine and clinical lead for end of life care, shared her thoughts on this recently at the latest TEDxWinchester event. As part of her presentation she asked the audience: "Why is it that we struggle to plan and treat our deaths as preciously as we treat our lives? How do we struggle to respect and provide consideration?" You can read more about her TEDx talk at https://lnkd.in/eK_Wyrva

Today, on International What Matters Most to You? Day, let's reflect on the power of shifting our approach to care. Moving from asking "What's the matter with you?" to "What matters to you?" opens doors to transformative conversations between caregivers and individuals. Prioritizing meaningful dialogues can lead to shared understanding and support, ensuring that everyone's values are respected throughout their care journey. 🏥⚕️👩🏻⚕️🩵#WhatMattersMost #HealthcareConversations #InternationalDay

Paperwork is part of the problem but not the main concern when I speak to my colleagues. Why doesn’t the OCFP conduct (or any of our “representative bodies, for that matter) a *brutally honest* survey including questions related to wait times and lack of access to hospital and family health team resources for the average community family doctor? I would also argue there is a grave disparity between urban and rural practices. The OCFP should also consider actually tracking where every cent of our healthcare funding is being spent. #StopGaslightingDrs #NoGovAccountability #OnPoli
The Ontario College of Family Physicians now predicts that 4.4 million, or one in four Ontarians, will be without a family doctor by 2026, including more than 430,000 people in Peel Region. Read the op-ed by OCFP President-Elect Dr. Jobin Varughese. https://lnkd.in/gize3HGr

Fewer than 50% of Canadians get palliative care in the last month of their lives. Globally, 56.8M individuals need these services. Yet compassionate, accessible palliative and end-of-life support remains out of reach for many. This World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we contemplate the intersection of personal experience and policy-making when it comes to these necessary health services...and why it's so essential Canadians have universal and equitable access to palliative care. In her deeply personal 5à7 Research Talk, Queen's Nursing and Health Quality researcher Dr. Katie Goldie highlights how just four approaches can improve timely access at all entry points to healthcare. 📺 Watch her research talk: https://lnkd.in/gBXcNFuQ #WHPCDay23

#osteopathicmedicine is a "whole person" approach to medicine - treating the entire person rather than just the symptoms. With a focus on preventive health care, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) receive special and extensive training in the musculoskeletal system and in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) thus helping patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don't just fight illness, but help prevent it, too. #medicaleducation #medicaldoctors #medicalconference #postgraduate #postgraduatestudies #physiotherapists #osteopath #internationalosteopathictraining #medicalexcellence
