Authoritarians sow fear, blaming 'others' for our struggles. Neoliberals say 'work hard, it'll pay off.' 💡 It’s time for progressives to tell a compelling story of our own. National director of the Working Families Party Maurice Mitchell encourages us to turn to one another—to shape that story together: https://lnkd.in/gGgZG5Gr

Over the past few years, we have been witnessing the rise of far-right political movements. Such political movements were considered to have been dead and long forgotten post-WWII. However, they have been gaining traction threatening to undo the hard-fought gains of the past generations: homeownership, healthcare, social safety nets, and civil liberties. Neoliberalism has been accused by many commentators of having accelerated the erosion of many of the tenets of liberalism. So our question this week is: "Should we view the rise of the far-right as a new development or is it simply neoliberalism unmasked?" Let us know what you think in the comments. #liberalism #conservative #liberty #fascism

We know that in life, the road of democracy, or the road of equity or whatever road we build to try to make things more fair, will remain full of potholes. We can either accept this reality and move on, or we can find ourselves going up and down as we move across these potholes. The potholes of unfairness can be filled, but by our own sense of fairness. That fairness is what we recognize as becoming fair to ourselves and not just how we experience felt-fairness. We know that today the focus is on triggering points and that we can all be triggered by external stimuli. We provide trigger warnings so that we can protect those who are very sensitive or do not possess resilience. How we cope depends on where we are on the receiving end of life. Just as there is an 80/20 (more like 99/1) for economic fairness, there's a long-tail of unfairness. How is life so fair to some people and so cruel to others? We can differentiate fairness as a value judgement but our minds are wired to notice unfairness. We need to adjust this balance in our own being and if we don't, effects like depression will remind us that there is an unresolved conflict or an unchecked reactivity within us. What we have we can appreciate, what we have not, endure. Like Reply
Mixing Stability and Unfairness The comment of Charlotte Wittenkamp on my previous post on “The Pressure Cooker of Oppression” ignited the idea of this post. Part of Charlotte’s comment reads, “The increase in depression rates all over the Western world indicates that something is off. It is the whistle that is not heard, both because of stigma and because it is not convenient to listen”. In societies in which 20% of the people or even less percentage have 80% of the wealth can fairness survive? Wealthy people want stability. However, stability and unfairness do not mix. This leads to depression because the majority of people strive hard to live better but with little success. They whistle their complaints but because of pride and inconvenience, wealthy people do not listen. I wonder if unfairness and democracy would be homogeneous ever! Please share your thoughts. #ParetoRule #wealth #unfairness #democracy

"The common good — ensured by popular government — took precedence over individual liberty when the two were in conflict. " The entire article can be summed up with group think vs individual liberty. A subtle tik tok sort of Chinese mentality. Behind all the fudged statistics is the message that group think will make you live longer. Then how come China has the lower life expectancy? The areas pointed out as longer living are more affluent. The map is a stretch when Port St. Lucie and Vero Beach are considered, "Spanish Carribean." If I take the oldest people living in the so called "Red Republican" area, they probably are well over 100 years old. This illustrates the INDIVIDUAL not the group. Genetics play a great part as well as the luck of the draw. Yet when we all have to face our maker; we go to that eternal RIP INDIVIDUALY. We aren't Lemmings over the mountain as suggested in this article. As a college President, Frank Wu should be aware that the Constitution is based on the rights of the INDIVIDUAL.
