The negotiations for China's accession to the WTO once involved discussions on intellectual property protection. Over the decades of reform and opening up, the influx of foreign brands into China led to a heightened focus on addressing infringement issues. Notably, Alibaba vigorously combated counterfeiters on its platform. However, this protection mindset primarily remained at the commercial practice level. Unfortunately, despite significant efforts, the challenge persists, with the emergence of cheap imitations posing a major threat to authentic domestic brands. Consumers, seemingly indifferent to sellers' authenticity, often opt for cheaper alternatives. The prevailing societal attitude appears to accept this as a norm. Interestingly, the concept of "building a brand" is now being emphasized by original creators as a potential solution. They believe that establishing their brand could effectively address the issue. #china #chinabusiness #intellectualproperty #brandbuilding

Tadashi Yanai, chairman and president of Fast Retailing, the company that operates UNIQLO, held a financial result briefing on April 11th. On the occasion, he commented on the historically low level of the yen against the dollar in the foreign exchange market, saying, “It can't be good for Japan.'' The head of one of Japan's leading global companies has clearly stated that the trend of a weaker yen is not a good thing. However, the Bank of Japan has not yet made any clear statements about foreign exchange intervention. Indeed, the timing of foreign exchange intervention will not be announced in advance. But the view of those involved in the foreign exchange market is that there will be no foreign exchange intervention by them for some time yet. #tadashiyanai #uniqlo #fastretailingjapan #briefinguniqlopresident #weakyen #foreigncurrencymarketjapan

Transforming B2B marketing from Boring 2 Brilliant to Drive business Growth l ReThink Retail Global Top Influencers 2022 2023
Singaporeans collectively took holidays (and their spending) overseas in December 2023. This is one of the explanations why retail suffered a drop last month. Categorically speaking, only food & alcohol, jewellery & watches and computer & telcomm equipment registered year-on-year growth. Biggest "loser" was "recreational goods", which makes sense as everyone was out of Singapore "recreationing". January 2024's retail statistics should be interesting with the 1% increase in goods and services tax (GST). #retail #singapore #physicalretailisnotdead https://lnkd.in/g7XuAnfi

Taiwan – much stronger in August After a sluggish Q2, we'd started to think the best of Taiwan's recovery was over. But IP data today, as well as export volumes, are consistent with the big bounce seen in August export values. Retail sales were weaker, but still suggest much more resilience than consumption in Korea. Click below to read more, or get in touch if you are interested in subscribing. #Taiwan #TaiwanEconomy

South Korea's Direct Purchase Ban: What It Means for #Consumers and #Businesses Starting next month, South Korea will implement a #ban on direct overseas purchases of 80 items, including children's products and electrical goods, that lack KC certification. This decision is in response to the influx of harmful products through Chinese platforms like Alibaba Group, Temu, and SHEIN, with nearly KRW 7 trillion in transactions last year. The government aims to prioritize consumer safety by strengthening regulations, particularly for products posing high risks of safety accidents. For businesses, this move emphasizes the need for compliance with local safety standards, potentially enhancing corporate competitiveness. Consumers should be aware that this change could impact their finances, as discussions about lowering the duty-free threshold for overseas purchases are ongoing. Stay informed and ensure all purchases meet the required safety certifications to avoid disruptions. #ConsumerSafety #BusinessCompliance #SouthKorea #DirectPurchaseBan #KCcertification
