Today is World Bike Day and itโs appropriate that Iโm in the center of Paris, a city thatโs undergoing what is perhaps the most ambitiously rapid transition from car dominated city to bike city. Paris is actively transforming its urban mobility at a pace like no city before. The โPlan Vรฉlo 2021-2026โ involves a โฌ250 million (about $A400 million) investment to expand cycling infrastructure, aiming to convert temporary lanes from the pandemic into permanent fixtures and add over 130 kilometers of protected lanes. The result of this unprecedented investment has seen a remarkable doubling in bicycle usage on Parisian streets between October 2022 and October 2023. Doubling in one year! Thatโs unprecedented in any city let alone one the size of Paris. Now around 30% of trips by locals in Paris are taken by bicycle. This is extraordinary given bicycle modal share still sat under 5% in 2019. By some reports, bicycle use now exceeds car use in Paris [walking and public transit are first and second]. The โCode de la Rueโ initiative has also led to a 40% decrease in car traffic and a 45% reduction in pollution. I love that Paris has come so far so quickly because it shows that with the right investments any city can do it. It is a choice. If cities are serious about sustainability and a quick transition to a low carbon future then we all need to follow the lead of Paris. In contrast Perth is only building around 18km of new bike lanes a year. At the current rate Perth will not have a complete bike network until 2110! So hereโs to World Bike Day and to choosing sustainable and liveable cities.

The potential planning exemption for bicycle shedsโmotivated by difficult or non-existent rear access to residencesโmarks a significant policy shift that could have far-reaching implications for cycling infrastructure and urban planning. Here's a quick rundown: ๐ Dublin City Council's Bikebunker initiative aims to address this issue in city center areas. However, suburban residents who have front gardens but no simple rear access stand to benefit as well. ๐ The UK Government's current proposal allows for bin and bike stores in front gardens if they are no more than 2 meters in width, 1 meter in depth, and 1.5 meters in height. ๐ Public sentiment seems to be that, while the height restriction is fair, the depth and width constraints could be too limiting, especially for households with multiple or cargo bikes. ๐ Larger vehicles such as cars and vans currently do not face similar spatial restrictions, raising questions of fairness and equity. ๐ Alternative solutions, such as the dimensions used in the Bikehanger program, could provide a middle path that ensures adequate storage without compromising neighborhood aesthetics. Notably, the Irish Department of Housing and support from the Green Party are spearheading efforts for a planning exemption. The suggestion is to remove the need for planning permission for bike storage units with a floor area of up to 4 meters squared and a height of 1.2 meters. Cycling through the crowded city streets to work was once a dream. Now, it's increasingly becoming our reality. A recent McKinsey study offers a peek into the future of transport, and it shows that our cities are pedalling fast towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and efficient future. https://lnkd.in/gZkK5z9W Copenhagen now boasts of owning five times more bicycles than cars, whereas Lisbon plans to double its 84 km of cycling paths, signs of a broader shift in our urban landscapes. Can you imagine the transformative impact when bicycle pedals replace the deafening roar of engines? The study offers a thought-provoking scenario - replacing just 22.5% of kilometres travelled by cars with bicycles in a mid-sized European city. With reduced congestion, decreased environmental footprint, and economic advantages, the benefits are hard to ignore. However, no change is without its challenges. While the shift towards micromobility bears incredible benefits, it requires decisive efforts from city leaders for its successful execution. We need initiatives such as more mobility hubs, safer infrastructures, regulation changes, and public support. While it's a crucial factor, safety cannot be overlooked. Bicycle usage needs to be thoughtfully managed to prevent an increase in road fatalities. โข Sustainable Transport in Queensland โข Since moving to Brisbane late last year, I have noticed a few points of difference in regard to bicycle parking use for new developments. Mostly, Iโve observed that there is generally an oversupply of bicycle parking in comparison to the number of people riding their bicycles to/from work, university or home. ย Let's have a brief look at the planning scheme provisions for Brisbane and the cycling capital, Melbourne, for residential developments. ย Schedule 6.31 of the Brisbane City Planning Scheme has provisions for minimum bicycle parking rates: - Multiple dwelling: 1 resident space per dwelling, 1 visitor space per 4 dwellings. ย Clause 52.34 of Victorian Planning Provisions have the following minimum bicycle parking rates: - Dwelling (for developments of four or more storeys): 1 resident space to each 5 dwellings, 1 visitor space to each 10 dwellings. ย Based on the above, it's clear that the bicycle parking requirements in Melbourne are far less than those required in Brisbane. ย So, how can Brisbane incentivise the use of bicycle parking and sustainable transport modes to effectively utilise the amenities provided for cyclists? Should the planning scheme seek to maintain such high minimum bicycle parking rates in the hopes that commuters follow the micromobility trends becoming increasingly prevalent throughout Australia? What are the key impediments preventing more cyclists taking to the roads around Brisbane?
