"If you're able to improve the behavioral health symptoms that people are having, your outcomes improve, and they're less likely to be going back to your emergency room. They're less likely to be calling back their surgeon or their primary care doctor for another appointment because the psychiatric piece isn't getting in the way of their recovery." Rogers' Dr. Jerry Halverson recently joined the American Hospital Association to discuss the importance of integrating behavioral and physical health to improve outcomes for patients, providers, and payers: https://ow.ly/fNKk50SnfJY

Today marks National Physician Suicide Awareness Day. As the team at The Physicians Foundation recently published, "… stigma and structural barriers prevent current and future physicians from seeking the care and support they need, with the majority of physicians (78%), residents (79%) and medical students (76%) agreeing that there is a stigma surrounding mental health and seeking mental health care among physicians." Together, we can make a difference in preventing physician suicide. It all starts with recognizing the warning signs in someone who might be struggling. Let the HEART acronym guide you: Health, Emotions, Attitude, Relationships, and Temperament. Cc. "Our patients are not siloed in their concerns. Comorbidity is significant. We know that 10-30% of people with heart disease have psychiatric concerns." When healthcare is siloed, patients are the ones caught in the middle and forced to navigate the landscape of healthcare specialization. Collaborative care seeks to bridge the gap between primary care and psychiatric care to make the road to treatment easier on patients and improve medical outcomes. Mena Mirhom, MD, FAPA and George Nasra, MD, discuss this in the latest episode of Mind Matters: https://hubs.la/Q01V_nyj0 #Healthcare #MentalHealth #PrimaryCare

Quality end of life care IS healthcare and a basic human right. The stigma and misunderstanding surrounding mental health and pain management is far too prevelant in hospice care. I should not have to explain to a pharmacist why so many medications are being prescribed at once for a terminally ill cancer patient. The fact that they are terminally ill and have a valid physicians order should be sufficient. More education needs to be provided to all healthcare professionals (especially those working with chronically ill patients) on not only the importance of managing someone's physical conditions, but also the importance of managing someone's mental health conditions. This is vital in controlling symptoms in terminally ill patients.

When it comes to cancer care, so much emphasis is put on the physical health of patients, but what about mental health? Too often healthcare providers neglect the emotional needs of cancer patients & survivors. Funding & staffing issues make this a tough problem to solve, but we need to start doing something to ensure that emotional health is taken care of, too. #MentalHealthMatters #CancerSupport #EmotionalHealth

As a leader in the mental health space, Otsuka-people are dedicated to caring for those who care for our patients—standing with them the way they stand with their loved ones—and offering the tools they need for the health of others and themselves. Nearly half of all people living with Alzheimer’s disease experience symptoms of agitation, which can result in immense emotional, physical, and financial burdens for patients, their caregivers, and the healthcare system. As part of the Hill live event, Otsuka Vice President of Corporate Affairs Debra Barrett shares our perspective on the many obstacles caregivers must overcome, particularly when caring for a loved one diagnosed with agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.
