This is an inspirational story about the power of vulnerability. One email from a senior leader about their mental health challenges can create positive ripple effects throughout an organization. Vulnerability is a leadership strength, not a leadership weakness. #USC #USCMarshall #Leadership #Vulnerability #MentalHealth

Our first responders see and endure many difficult things during their daily routines and throughout their careers. Sometimes the effects of the things we see can be adverse. The stigmas in law enforcement today prove that. And because of that, we cannot continue to use the same tired approaches to emotional health and expect to have a healthier outcome. When we start proactively supporting our first responders emotional health, we can and will save lives. We’ve paid the price for inaction for far too long. Let’s make 2024 the year we all make mental health a real priority for our men and women. https://lnkd.in/gPKUDdT2

Following in the footsteps of Dr. John Bowlby and his development of attachment theory, his close collaborator Dr. Mary Ainsworth devised a standardized procedure in the 1970s entitled The Strange Situation. As its name suggests, The Strange Situation was designed to present children with an unfamiliar but not overwhelmingly frightening experience to observe attachment security in children within the context of caregiver relationships. The procedure involves a series of eight episodes lasting approximately three minutes each, in which a mother, child, and stranger are introduced, separated, and reunited. Based on the infant’s reactions to these different situations, the infants were classified into four different attachment styles based on the patterns of behavior she observed: secure, avoidant, anxious, or disorganized. Learn more about the pivotal role of Dr. Ainsworth's study in the development of attachment theory and its influence on my own work in my new book, "The New Rules of Attachment," coming March 2024: https://bit.ly/3MvuvvF https://lnkd.in/gw9arZVm #selfcare #motivation #mindfulness #healing #healing #therapy #mindset #meditation #wellbeing #productivity #healthylifestyle #healthyliving #psychology #attachment #attachmentstyles #attachmenttheory #DrAinswoth #Development

Jane Elliott's brown eye blue eye test, calling it impactful and thought-provoking. She highlights how the test's classroom simulation effectively demonstrates the harmful effects of discrimination. Discrimination trauma is the psychological distress stemming from unfair treatment based on personal characteristics. It induces emotions like shame, fear, and anger and diminishes self-esteem. This trauma affects relationships, work, and overall well-being while perpetuating systemic inequalities. Combating discrimination trauma entails creating supportive spaces, utilizing therapy and support groups, and implementing policy changes to reduce discrimination. Challenging discrimination at societal and individual levels is vital for prevention and healing. https://lnkd.in/g_qWG6h5

Tear Down Those Walls I was born into a family where many of my relatives worked in law enforcement. The day I started first grade, I received a rude awakening that some of society disliked law enforcement when a couple of kids beat me up for being a police officer's child. To protect myself, I quickly mastered the art of building emotional walls in a world where vulnerability is a weakness and was not accepted in my family. I have buried my emotions behind layers of strength and resilience for most of my life, allowing me to live with a false sense of control and self-preservation. With age comes wisdom, and with the years, I have realized the importance of tearing down these walls and would like to share why it matters to tear them down. Emotional walls are barriers to hurt and disappointment, distancing us from meaningful connections by isolating our feelings and cutting us off from empathy, compassion, and experiences that tie humans together. Opening ourselves to vulnerability is a strength that allows us to create bridges of understanding and empathy, resulting in more profound connections. Sharing our struggles and triumphs opens us to others, and these shared experiences enrich our lives. After a year into my transformative journey, I know that breaking down emotional walls isn't a weakness but courage. I invite you to embrace the highs and lows of living an authentic life and tear down your walls to build more profound relationships in our New Norm. Do you live with or without emotional walls? Think about it!! J #emotionalintelligence #emotionalwellness #teardownyourwalls
