Congratulations to the team of NREL authors and collaborators who earned a 2022 Best Paper award from ACS ES&T Engineering! 🥇 The awards recognize “the most significant and impactful contributions of all our excellent authors,” according to the journal. In their award-winning study, the authors analyzed different methods used to recycle municipal #wastewater to help the country adopt more cost-effective and energy-efficient ways to treat and reuse water. The 2023 EU Raw Materials week is behind us but great memories remain. One of them goes to the satellite event by the AlSiCal_project, that offered me the exciting opportunity to chair their panel discussion. 🎤 AlSiCal project develops an innovative technology for the sustainable production of alumina, silica and calcium carbonate from currently unexploited aluminosilicate resources. It sounds very technical but we can summarise it as a project that would allow for delivery the above-mentioned materials with no bauxite residue and a potentially negative balance of CO2 emissions. Isn’t it that intriguing? 🌟 The technology is not ready to go to the market yet, but it gave the experts in the panel an opportunity to debate more broadly on ‘’The challenges of European sustainable growth in the raw materials industry.’’ They covered 4 topics: -       Competitiveness: EU vs. global -       Environmental aspects -       Social acceptance -       EU regulatory framework   A big thanks for an open and very informed discussion to: Asuncion (Suni) Aranda (AlSiCal coordinator), Aurela SHTIZA PhD (IMA-Europe), Nick Bitsios (Mytilineos S.A.) and Peter Tom Jones (KU Leuven).  👏

Two methods can be used to draw up an inventory of the life cycle (#lca) of a product, system or service:       📈 the bottom-up method, based on the unit processes (process-based life cycle assessment - PLCA) that make up the system      📉 the top-down method, based on transaction inputs-outputs (Input-Output LCA - IOLCA) which disaggregates an entire system by economic sector.      To learn more about the potential of combining these two approaches to help municipalities better understand their environmental footprints, read this article written by our PhD student Paalo Andrea Moreno Yañez as part of our collaboration with Agence Science-Presse. 💻👇    https://lnkd.in/eZrJAf7A
