Roechling Industrial Mt. Pleasant is committed to promoting careers in manufacturing and machining. Since late 2022, we’ve partnered with local schools, including the Pre-Apprenticeship program at Greensburg Salem High School and the STEAM Carnival at Hutchinson Elementary, inspiring nearly 600 K-5 students with hands-on STEAM activities. In 2023, we introduced "Play It Cool Plastics" to simplify CNC Machining for 5th graders through an engaging video and scavenger hunt, which highlighted machining, programming, and coding. This year, our "Industry Inventions" program had students use our materials to create innovative products for various industries, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. We’re proud to share our passion for manufacturing, build community connections, and inspire future generations. Roechling Industrial Mt. Pleasant looks forward to continuing this journey in the 2024-2025 school year.

Did you know that interactive activities can enhance student learning by six times? 📚 Our apprentices took a visit to explore manufacturing where they engaged in an interactive learning session and explored various production processes on the manufacturing floor. By learning that the factory is linked together using modern construction technologies, they were able to link it back to their current university modules. A great day of learning! #interactive #construction #development Daniel Clayton John Ball Keane W. Nathaniel Leake Brady Boardman

Learning at its Best!
'Welding with Chocolate' Session Sparks Joy and Learning In a delightful educational event, TWI's welding engineer, Joanna Nicholas, recently visited Ickworth Park Primary School to introduce the captivating world of welding through the interactive 'Welding with Chocolate' programme. Originally designed by Dr Philippa Moore, CEng FWeldI FIMMM IWE, 'Welding with Chocolate' is an inventive way to teach the fundamentals of welding and engineering. This programme transforms chocolate into an educational tool, allowing children to experience hands-on learning by constructing and testing chocolate bridges. During the sessions led by Joanna, students from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to KS2 were not only taught how to 'weld' chocolate but also explored the structural differences between chocolate plank bridges and box-section bridges. These engaging experiments help demonstrate the practical applications of STEM subjects in everyday life, promoting an understanding of how fun and impactful engineering can be. Through 'Welding with Chocolate', TWI continues to demonstrate our commitment to educational outreach and to inspiring future generations in STEM. #STEM #WeldingWithChocolate #Welding #Engineering #STEMEducation STEM Ambassadors | STEM Learning UK | TWI Materials Group | The Welding Institute | STEM.org | Educational Research

A few weeks ago, I talked about Spruce’s relationship with Rider University and how we welcome entrepreneurial students onto our team every year to discuss project ideas. Well, this year’s group has arrived! We’re looking into mechanizing in the industry. With more automatic machines and robotics, we may need less custodial staff, but we certainly need more mechanics. Our biggest problem is that fewer kids want to become mechanics. For this year’s project, our students are going to explore the idea of attracting new talent. Our mechanics at Spruce are getting older, and we need more already. The project we’re considering is partnering with vocational schools to create an apprenticeship at Spruce with an opportunity for a job at the end. The students are going to research the viability of this idea and let us know if we should implement it or not. We took our students’ advice last year, and it’s gone great—I can’t wait to see what they come up with this time! #opportunity #business #leadership #entrepreneurship #mechanics

Happy Engineer's Day! 🎉👷♀️👷♂️ At ibrick, we believe that every child has the potential to be an engineer. Our brick-based STEM projects are designed to nurture this potential, turning playtime into valuable engineering experience. Here's how ibrick is building the engineers of tomorrow: - Hands-on Problem Solving: Kids tackle real engineering challenges by building and optimizing their creations for various missions. - Mechanical Principles in Action: Through playing with gears and motors, complex concepts become tangible and understandable. - Iterative Design Process: Children learn to plan, build, test, and improve – mirroring real-world engineering practices. - Spatial Reasoning: Interpreting and following building instructions enhances 3D thinking skills crucial for engineering. By engaging with ibrick's projects, children aren't just playing – they're developing the foundational skills of engineering. They're learning to see the world as a set of solvable problems, limited only by their creativity and perseverance. To all engineers out there: Thank you for building our world. To the parents and educators: Thank you for nurturing our future innovators. Join the ibrick STEM adventure and start #EngineersDay #STEM #FutureEngineers #LEGOLearning #ibrick

A proposal to establish an advanced manufacturing apprenticeship and community robotics center at Tunxis Community College in Farmington is gaining support from business advocates in Connecticut. Senate Bill 430, introduced by the Commerce Committee, seeks authorization for up to $4 million in bonds from the state Bond Commission to establish the center within the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. This facility, developed in collaboration with local manufacturers, aims to address the state's workforce shortage by providing advanced manufacturing programming and training in robotics. With a significant investment required to launch the center, advocates emphasize the importance of funding to prepare future employees for the evolving manufacturing landscape. Industry leaders, including the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) and Connecticut Roundtable on Climate and Jobs (CRCJ), endorse the proposal, highlighting the critical need for skilled workers in the growing manufacturing sector. What an interesting mechanism a Shaper Machine has! As shown in the picture, the advance is slow to remove material efficiently, while the return is much faster to reduce the 'dead' time of the process. What's fascinating is the conversion of circular motion into linear motion, a process facilitated by the Whitworth mechanism. This type of machine is quite old, and if you're young, you might never have seen one in a workshop. Luckily, I had the opportunity to use one during my apprenticeship. It is easy to operate and extremely helpful for building prototypes or small batches in production. However, for mass production, it can be a bit inefficient due to the time lost in the process, and there are more modern and efficient solutions available. In the first comment, I will post a video demonstrating the working principle! #mechanicalengineer #production #shapermachine #mechanism
