Compounding - Bitumen Bitumen, from a chemical standpoint, is a semi-solid to semi-hard, fusible, high molecular weight hydrocarbon mixture derived from the fractional distillation of petroleum. It contains the carbon disulfide soluble components of natural asphalts, paraffin, and montan waxes. Bitumen is categorized as a thermoplastic material, meaning its viscosity varies with temperature. When heated, it shifts from a solid to a viscous state and eventually transforms into a thin liquid between 150°C and 200°C. Historical findings in the Middle East have revealed early applications of bitumen, and by the 19th century, continuous production became viable. Presently, bitumen is predominantly obtained as a byproduct of vacuum distillation of petroleum. To meet specific quality standards, it is frequently blended with heavy vacuum gas oil to achieve the desired property profile. Bitumen is a crucial carrier matrix in various applications due to its sealing properties, weather resistance, wettability, and adhesion to dry surfaces. These characteristics are essential in a wide range of applications, including backing layers for carpets and floor coverings, heavy-duty sound and vibration-insulating foils, components in vehicles and technical equipment, and various construction industry applications. The traditional method of producing highly filled bitumen compounds involves using batch internal mixers. While these methods have advantages such as flexibility, easy offline dosing of small ingredients, and variable dwell and mixing times, they also have limitations like interim storage times and batch-to-batch variations. In contrast, continuous processes offer benefits such as uniform process conditions, a narrow residence time distribution, and integrated process steps. The Kneader excels in precise temperature control, handling differences in viscosity between bitumen and polymers/elastomers, and effectively mixing high filler proportions. Recent advancements have expanded the application fields of the Kneader, allowing for inline processing on carrier substrates and the use of alternative recipe components. The Kneader system is a reliable and adaptable choice for compounding highly filled bitumen compounds and their potential substitution materials.

Ultrafiltration Removes Oil and Metals for an automobile parts manufacturer Ultrafiltration removes oil and metals to allow the treated water to be acceptable for discharge for an automobile parts manufacturer. A UF system was selected based upon its ability to consistently meet the discharge requirements without chemicals and with limited operator involvement. This UF system removes oil and reduces zinc in compliance with discharge requirements. Ultrafiltration excels at the clarification of solutions containing suspended solids, bacteria and high concentrations of macromolecules, including oil thus making this an excellent solution to this problem. Ultrafiltration uses a membrane to separate suspended and colloidal materials in an aqueous phase. It will normally separate everything that is not soluble and some larger macro molecules that are soluble. Ultrafiltration uses a PVDF tubular membrane that is permeable to perform the separation. One of the uses that demonstrates the usefulness of ultrafiltration is separation of oil in an emulsion from water. In this case, machining coolant oil emulsions can have the oil separated and concentrated, with the water passing through the membrane, and the concentrated oil phase disposed.
