Come check out my piece on Affirmative Action and the Opportunity Gap, published with Nonprofit Quarterly! An excerpt: “Elite college institutions are exclusive by definition, but their intentional exclusivity is permissible as long as it remains meritocratic. In rhetoric, these institutions were built to discover and cultivate generations of exceptional talent - to ensure that those who step into decision-making roles in our society, are most qualified to speak for the needs of a society they represent. In rhetoric, the purpose of these elite institutions is to source for talent wherever talent may be found - which should in no way be determined by one’s class or race. But in practice, elite colleges show a preference for students from wealthy families - a preference not justified by merit nor excellence when these wealthy admits are compared with their lower-income peers. And because top employers like to recruit from elite colleges, this wealth-based bias impacts the talent demographic of all elite careers - ones that shape commerce, policy, innovation, and care for generations of people. In the absence of a force that counteracts this bias, elite college institutions perpetuate inequities of class by deciding who gets to walk their halls and - eventually - who gets to have power in our society. It reinforces a generational concentration of power and influence among those who already have power and influence." Kudos, Glossier, Inc. Grant Program For Black-Owned Beauty Businesses, for at least upping the ante in terms of grant size. I get really frustrated seeing the proliferation of female founder grant programs/pitch competitions with teensy weensy amounts, where we're expected to be grateful and compete for crumbs, while the VC funding banquet lavishes millions, nay, billions on white bro founders. Glossier is awarding four $50,000 grants and one former grantee $100,000 Alumni Award - at least that's not nothing. Social Impact Lawyer, Professor, Adviser | CEO Beyond Advisers | Simplifying the hardest parts of doing good in philanthropy, business, social enterprise, and law. Entrepreneur. Writer. Optimist. CoFounder Molis Coaching
In times of global calamity and deep division, service is often the greatest salve. It's hard to continue with "business as usual" in life, let alone on LinkedIn, when the world faces deep challenges. But when we are in service to others, our greatest opportunity each day is to continue our work. The world's nonprofits are more important than ever, especially during difficult times. And so the leadership of those organizations, and board service in particular, means everything. When we speak from experience on Nonprofit Board Growth, Development & Engagement, we don't speak only from our Beyond Advisers experience supporting our clients—we also speak from personal board service. With the Two Bit Circus Foundation, I'm privileged to support creation of STEAM-powered creativity for kids, classrooms, and communities. As part of the U.S. Soccer Foundation Leadership Council, Amy Curran and I support children in underserved communities gain opportunities and coaching that lasts a lifetime. On the Chicago Kent College of Law Alumni board, I add my insights to help support the future of the most innovative law school in the country so that it can educate a new generation of legal change makers. In the past, I’ve been a board member, adviser, and/or secretary to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Imagination.org, Walt Disney Birthplace and others, all of which have grown themselves and helped me become better in my work, life, and creative endeavors. An organization’s Board, no matter how you serve or support it, is the heart and soul of its success! What boards do YOU serve on and why? I’d love to hear. P.S. If you missed it, check out my prior post on Nonprofit Board 101. #ImpactBeyondBelief #SocialImpact #Nonprofit #Board #NonprofitSuccessSeries #Innovation #STEAM #Soccer #Law
