I’m excited to share that this summer I’ll be interning at Sierra Space as a PhD Research Intern on their Ghost initiative 🚀 While neither Sierra Space nor an internship were originally on my radar for this summer, some great conversations with the leaders of the company piqued my interest. I found that not only are they currently working on several exciting projects that align well with my PhD research, but they are also developing several game-changing technologies that could make a huge impact in the space and defense industry in the coming years 🛰️ Even better, their high-level leadership and recruitment team took the time to schedule chats with me, discuss opportunities for mutually-beneficial work, understand my future plans, and tailor the internship to my needs to help make it feasible. Definitely a green flag for a workplace! My project, Ghost, is a state-of-the-art space delivery system engineered to safely return objects from space to precise locations on Earth. It uses a deployable decelerator (I think of it as an upside-down parachute 🪂 ) to guide its reentry, and the goal is to have it be able to deliver a payload to anywhere on Earth in 90 minutes or less. I’ll gain experience in using CFD on a real-world project and learn from some fantastic aerodynamicists and engineers. Hello LinkedIn community! Over the past ten years I have mentored dozens of students and young professionals as they made major education, career, and life decisions. Many of them have accomplished significant goals such as obtaining internships with NASA centers, being accepted at Ivy League schools, and securing prized positions with the U.S. government. As my own career with NASA progressed, I realized I was applying, and recommending decision analysis and risk mitigation concepts pioneered by NASA to my own life and that of my mentees in service of achieving these goals. I’m thinking about assembling a comprehensive guide about how to use these principles to achieve your own goals, and avoid the feeling that life and opportunities are passing you by. 🚀 “For every astronaut, you need hundreds, or even thousands, of people with very different skills.” This is according to our Head of Secure Space, Professor Markos T., in a new article as part of Mediaplanet’s ‘Opportunities in STEM 2024’ campaign. Markos calls for diverse skills in #space, underlining why this is crucial to fulfilling the potential of the UK’s fast-growing space sector. He highlights how we need people from all walks of life and, while attracting those with the right technical and engineering skills is key, support functions and soft skills are also fundamental to taking the sector to new heights. And traditional degree-based routes aren’t the only way to get into space. Markos points out that there are many alternative ways to enter the industry and #STEM more broadly – from entry level support roles to apprenticeships, such as our space degree apprenticeship with the University of Portsmouth.
