Senior Executive, Advisor & Thought Leader ➤ Shaping the Future of Mobility ➤ Change Management Specialist ➤ Establishing Safe, Sustainable & Dynamic Transportation in the Pacific Northwest
There is so much wisdom to consider in this post. Greater connectivity, along with equity in mobility, can be achieved. But we have to be willing to apply a growth mindset and approach the possibilities by being open to planning, thinking and organizing our networks differently - with human-centered design principles. Rather than perpetuating business as usual, around automobile-centric thinking, at the expense of every other mode of transportation. Not only will our planet thank us, but health, quality of life and human potential will all improve as a result.
Passenger rail in the USA and Europe. Let’s skip the “…but America is big!” excuse and notice how the European systems focus on city connecting pairs within regions whereas the American lines were designed for the Westward Expansion era, 200 years ago. There’s opportunity to do more, and do better! #highspeedrail

In the United States, passengers are coming back to public transport! 🇺🇸🚍 Last year, annual trips increased by 16% compared to 2022. People trust the public transport system as they go about their daily lives. Operators and authorities should prepare for continued demand growth. I'm excited to revisit the topic we (Railways Explained) covered in one of our previous video about develompent of HSR competition. Since then, there have been significant developments in Spain that are worth highlighting. Spain's National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) reported a increase by a third in passenger numbers, surpassing 8.4 million in Q3 2023. This boost is attributed to the competition among Renfe's AVE and low-cost Avlo services, iryo, and SNCF Voyageurs's Ouigo. Significantly, this competition has led to reduced fares. For example, Iryo’s entry on routes like Madrid-Seville and Madrid-Málaga resulted in fare reductions of 24% and 19%, respectively. One the other side, while passenger numbers have increased, train occupancy and utilization, crucial commercial metrics, have actually decreased. This trend isn't surprising since operators have introduced additional capacity, surpassing current demand. This strategy not only aims to attract more passengers but also complies with licensing conditions set by ADIF where each licensed operator must to run a minimum number of trains daily on each route. The notable increase in high-speed train passengers in Spain occurred even as regional and commuter train services, operated exclusively by Renfe Viajeros, were largely free of charge in 2023. This was part of government-funded anti-inflation programs that resulted in substantial growth in passenger numbers: around 76% for conventional medium-distance services, 40% for Avant high-speed medium-distance trains (which typically use high-speed infrastructure for shorter journeys), and 21% for Cercanías suburban services in major cities. Enhancing travel capacity and diversifying travel options, intercity #rail services are an essential component of a comprehensive regional #transportation system. HNTB's Peter Schwartz, Christopher Kopp and Dominic Spaethling pose key questions agencies should address to effectively plan new rail corridors as part of the Federal Railroad Administration's Corridor ID Program. https://bit.ly/4bwhKL2
