At Flight Robotics and Perception Group, we are excited to start 2024 with 3 cool paper acceptances! The first is an #ICRA 2024 paper on end-to-end thermal updraft detection and autonomous soaring. In this work, our student Christian Gall has developed a novel deep learning method to detect multiple thermal updrafts only from a series of local measurements made by an aircraft. This paves the way for real-time exploitation of thermals for autonomous soaring, something that could drastically improve aircraft endurance and allow us to perform various activities, like environment monitoring, for much longer time than other solutions like off-the-shelf multi-rotor drones. Can you imagine IQUA ROBOTICS underwater robots autonomously monitoring our oceans 24/7? Throughout this week, thanks to the #PLOMEproject, near the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya's Obsea underwater observatory in Vilanova i la Geltrú, trials have been conducted to validate technologies that will enable the future permanent deployment of AUV's. The trials utilized the Universitat de Girona Girona1000 AUV, along with its docking station installed on the seabed on Monday, AI-integrated cameras from Universitat de les Illes Balears, and the communication system developed by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. This suite of technologies will generate underwater databases for the scientific team of the #PLOMEproject (Institut de Ciències del Mar - CSIC) to assess the health of our seas and oceans. These experiments have been made possible thanks to the #AgenciaEstataldeInvestigación and the #NextGenerationfunds.
