Really excited about this webinar and to join with some of our Women Build Planes team members from Habitat For Aviation Building Equity for Aerospace Training: Inspirational Stories and Strategies to Engage Girls March 26, 2024 9:00 am Pacific / 12:00 pm Eastern Aerospace companies have struggled to meet existing needs for skilled technical workers and this gap between industry needs and qualified candidates is expected to grow. The number of technicians needed to do aircraft inspections, preventive and routine maintenance, and repairs greatly exceeds the number of students who choose an education in avionics. Young women in high school continue to be less likely than young men to choose to enter or to stay in career and technical education classes tied to these careers. Across all aspects of aviation, women currently make up only a fraction of the workforce – between 2% in mechanic roles and just over 16% in air traffic control.   Join this webinar to hear powerful stories from women in aviation sharing their journeys. I aspire to become an engineer who constantly develops and improves aircrafts for the future. I hope to inspire change to students from High school leading to University and get them interested in Design Engineering. I am also interested in flying aircrafts after I have completed my degree, especially for the SAAF( South African Air Force). I believe that this will allow me to get a better and deeper understanding of many airplanes and I will become a better Design Engineer. My journey at the University of the Witwatersrand has not been easy, given that I take time to adjust and adapt to new situations. Adapting to the workload and the environment has not been easy, leading to a decrease in efficiency in my 1st and 2nd year. Hence I have changed my approach to studying effectively and getting tasks done more efficiently. 3rd Year in Aeronautics focuses on the improvement of aircrafts as well as non procedural design. I know that I will learn a lot in this year.

India has the highest number of female pilots in the world. 15% of our pilots today are women, three times the global average. Whether it is fighter pilots or civil aviation, India is leading the world in the number of women pilots. Only in the 1990s did the IAF start recruiting women pilots for helicopters and aircraft. Interestingly, there was no special programme encouraging women to participate in pilot training, yet we have gotten these numbers. An achievement that we can be proud of. There is another interesting fact for those who judge women drivers and pilots. Studies have found that women pilots have lower crash rates than men—just 3%. Even though women in our country are making their mark in every field when given the opportunity, they still have a long road ahead. Compared with other professions, our women's representation in STEM (Science, Technology, Mathematics, Engineering) subjects is meagre. Reason? - Career breaks being looked down upon - Networking barriers rooted in patriarchy - Lack of female role models Like in aviation, women can be equally competent not only in STEM fields, but all professions, if given a fair opportunity. Studies globally have proved that gender-diverse teams bring multiple innovative ideas, solutions, and a balanced skill set. What are your thoughts on this?
