Incredible webcast this morning by Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) with presentations by Dr. Christine Ward-Paige🦈🌊 with eOceans®, Patricia Puig, PhD with Oceanogami and Blue-jobs, James Thorburn, and Patrick Lyne. 🌊 Incredible to see the borders of MPAs being defined by real data that has been accumulated over decades of interaction with the ocean. 🌊Great to hear discussions on how to decide where to put offshore windfarms, is it OK to put windfarms in an MPA or no? 🌊Great points on speeding up the process of getting and applying data, which used to take 10 years from collection to publication, and is now possible to do within days. 🌊Sometimes communities don't know where the MPAs are, even though they are a fishing-based community. Stakeholder engagement is super important, with studies showing that after stakeholder engagement fishers are much more supportive of the MPA than before. 🙏 Excited work hard on this by following these incredible leaders.

Excellent lineup for my panel at #IUFRO2024, Nature-climate solutions: Lessons to move from buzzword to transformative practice. Papers from Erin Sills, Suhyun Jung, and Musingo Tito Edward (MTE). Mbuvi. Comments from Anne Larson and questions from a really great crowd. My presentation built on our research on REDD safeguards under CIFOR-ICRAF’s Global Comparative Study on REDD to explore whether social safeguards can ‘do better’ for IPs and LCs. In short, no - at least not how they are currently conceptualized. The idea of transformative safeguards may be a contradiction as the reconfiguration of power relations that transformation would require lie beyond the realm of safeguards as they are currently understood. The #StickToScience campaign supports rapid negotiations between the #EU and #Switzerland. 📢#Research and #innovation stakeholders in Europe need clarification by July 2024 whether Switzerland will be eligible to submit projects for the 2025 calls under the #CommonUnderstanding from October 2023. Switzerland's association with #HorizonEurope is not yet guaranteed. It must be achieved as soon as possible in order to builf full R&I capacities in #Europe.

✍️ Take a look at my latest article on the 2024 GeoGov Summit, where public and private sector leaders discussed advancing National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) through collaboration. Cyril Smith highlighted the $2 trillion spent annually on geospatial data, calling for more local and private sector involvement. Matt Sokol and Richard Wade addressed challenges in state and local data sharing, while Ryan Bank and John Copple emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships for NSDI sustainability. Spatial Foresight featured in an Interact Programme workshop and discussed first findings of the ESPON Programme project on the ‘stocktaking review of the #TerritorialAgenda 2030’ and explored the Territorial Agenda 2030 possible links with Interreg. The workshop provided a short update on the state of play of the Territorial Agenda 2030 review by Spatial Foresight and then engaged in a lively discussion with participants on the possible links of the Territorial Agenda 2030 with Interreg and how it can be more integrated in the work of Interreg in the future.
