Elevating Quality Standards in Medical Coding: Addressing Key Challenges In recent times, I've observed a critical issue affecting our industry: a concerning decline in the expertise of quality assurance professionals within medical coding teams. This trend is proving to be a significant drawback, often leading to client escalations. Quality auditors play a pivotal role in our operations. Their responsibility goes beyond meeting targets; they should possess the knowledge and acumen to thoroughly audit processes and preemptively identify potential errors. Many issues can be caught early using tools like medical coder sheets, avoiding the need for deep record dives. However, our current approach seems to prioritize error identification over enhancing process quality. This has unfortunately fostered tensions between operations and quality teams, often resulting in a lack of accountability during client escalations and a propensity for blame games. It's time for us to take decisive action. Strengthening the qualifications and accountability of our auditors, fostering a culture of proactive error prevention, and promoting collaborative problem-solving between operations and quality teams are essential steps we must embrace. By doing so, we not only meet but exceed client expectations. Let's unite to raise the bar in our industry's quality assurance practices. As a remote Internal CRA, I know the importance of staying connected to the heartbeat of a clinical trial. One tool that's been my secret weapon? The wonderful: Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) 📜. (try not to 🙄, I swear they can be gold if used in a constructive way) Here are a few tips I think will give the SOP some more street cred: 1️⃣ Deep Dive, but Stay Current: Take the time to thoroughly read and understand each SOP. This knowledge is your armor in the field. But remember, SOPs are living documents... keep an eye out for updates and revisions. Being in the loop ensures you're always aligned with the latest standards and a good way to impress your boss. 2️⃣ Integration with Daily Tasks: Make SOPs your compass in daily tasks. They guide you through processes, ensuring consistency and compliance every step of the way. Save a link to the SOPs in your favorites and make CRTL F your best friend when needing to refer to specific language. 3️⃣ Training and Development: Leverage SOPs for continuous learning. They're a goldmine for training and developing your skills, especially when working with team members across departments. It never hurts to refer to SOPs in different specialties to stay sharp and knowledgeable. 4️⃣ Effective Communication: A quick copy and paste that references the SOP can set a foundation for clear communication within your team by creating a shared language and understanding. Remember, SOPs are not just guidelines; they are your roadmap to success in ensuring trial integrity and patient safety. We juggle the demands of accurate data generation, strict turnaround times, quality control, regulatory compliance, troubleshooting, and the ever-evolving landscape of technology. Amidst these challenges, workplace dynamics and relationships with colleagues and superiors are equally crucial. When a new administrative position is filled, whether it's a general supervisor, laboratory manager, or section supervisor, there’s inevitably a learning curve.
