📡 Introducing the Meshtastic Metrics Exporter: Empowering LoRaWAN Communities 🌐 I'm excited to share a project I've been working on: the Meshtastic Metrics Exporter. This tool bridges the gap between Meshtastic networks and powerful data visualization platforms like Prometheus and Grafana. 🤔 What is Meshtastic? Meshtastic is an open-source project that turns inexpensive LoRa radios into long-range mesh networks. It's popular for resilient, off-grid communication solutions. You can read more about it on their official website: https://meshtastic.org/ 🇮🇱 The Israeli Meshtastic Community In Israel, we've seen growing interest in Meshtastic for emergency communications and outdoor activities. Our community is experimenting with LoRaWAN technology to create expansive, low-power networks that operate independently of traditional infrastructure. 🛠️ Why I Built the Meshtastic Metrics Exporter As our network grew, we needed a way to monitor and analyze its performance. The Meshtastic Metrics Exporter: 1. 📊 Collects comprehensive data from MQTT servers 2. 📈 Exports metrics to Prometheus for easy querying 3. 📉 Provides pre-configured Grafana dashboards for instant visualization 4. 💾 Stores detailed node information in PostgreSQL for advanced analysis This tool allows us to track network health, optimize node placement, and understand usage patterns across our mesh network. 🌟 Open Source and Ready for Contribution I've made the Meshtastic Metrics Exporter open source, hoping it will benefit other Meshtastic communities worldwide. High availability clusters are vital in ensuring the data is always accessible but they come with challenges like split-brain and amnesia. We have tackled these issues head on. Split-brain, where nodes lose connection and make conflicting decisions, is managed through quorum and fencing, while amnesia where a failed node "forgets" data is prevented with robust data synchronization and redundancy mechanisms.
