Earlier this month, I participated in the Stout Future Leaders in Finance Case Study Competition. This program allowed me to further my education and learn about Stout’s Valuation Advisory practice and Disputes, Claims & Investigations practice. Over the course of three days, my team and I analyzed financial data of a large, publicly traded company and completed the following tasks: - Researched industry competitors based on financial statements, discount rates, and other financial variables - Projected growth rates based on financial data and industry research - Applied a Discounted Cash Flow Analysis to determine value This was an invaluable experience which allowed me to enhance my analytical, collaborative, and technical skills that will be beneficial as I pursue future career opportunities.

It’s #testomonialtuesday time with our clients United Fresh The United Fresh Consortium is one of the country's leading suppliers of fresh produce into the UK catering and hospitality sector. They are fast becoming the industry leader in working towards a genuinely sustainable supply chain for clients wanting to improve their current practices. We hear from Alexandra Feasey, Finance Director, about her experience of working with Pentlands. “I’d known Pentlands for 15 years and had always highly rated them, so when I joined United Fresh as Finance Director, I recommended that we changed our accountants to Pentlands. We have a complex business model which I knew Elinor and the Team would understand and be of benefit too. We value the transparency of their service proposition, and we have a clearly defined agreement which we pay monthly. There are no hidden costs, so I feel confident knowing that we won’t get any unexpected bills. It gives us the comfort of knowing we can ask questions and they are always willing to help. They also have great connections in their ‘little black book’ so we know that if they don’t know the answer, they will know someone that does. It makes our life so much easier that we have that kind of support on our side. I like the way Pentlands communicate. They are honest and talk clearly, they help you to understand the pros and cons that allow you to make big decisions with more ease and confidence. Elinor really knows her stuff, using her depth of knowledge to find the right solutions and make suggestions. She will also challenge our thinking, presenting us with a range of alternative options that we may not have thought of. We didn’t get that level of support from the previous accountants.” If you are reading this and would like a conversation about how we can help you, then please contact us on 01926 424455. Who Moved My Cheese?!? During my time as an article clerk at BDO South Africa I was introduced to a book that has since left a lasting impression on me: "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson. This simple yet profound story was given to us as a guide, a beacon to navigate the inevitable changes we would encounter in our careers and lives beyond the walls of BDO. Today, I reflect on how the lessons from this book still resonate, guiding me through the labyrinth of life's changes. "Who Moved My Cheese?" narrates the tale of four characters in a maze, each searching for their cheese— a metaphor for what we desire in life, be it success, love, or happiness. The cheese eventually moves, and their reactions to this change are telling. Sniff and Scurry, the mice, quickly adapt and go in search of new cheese. Meanwhile, Hem resists, clinging to where the cheese used to be, and Haw, though initially hesitant, learns to embrace the new quest for cheese, discovering not just new paths but also learning about himself along the way. The parallels to my journey, from those early days at BDO to the present, are striking. Embracing change, much like Haw, has become a cornerstone of my personal and professional growth. The maze has twisted and turned, filled with unexpected challenges and opportunities. Yet, the essence of moving forward, of adapting and finding new cheese, remains unchanged. The beauty of this book lies not just in its simplicity but in its universality. The maze and the cheese are different for everyone, yet the journey through change is something we all share. It's about finding the courage to let go of old comforts and the excitement in pursuing new possibilities. As I continue to navigate through my own maze, the lessons of Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw are a constant reminder: Change is inevitable, but growth is a choice. It's a lesson that has served me well since my days at BDO, reminding me that when faced with change, we have the power to find new cheese, to adapt, and to thrive. In the spirit of "Who Moved My Cheese?", let's embrace the changes in our lives with courage and optimism. The cheese will move, and so must we. #WhoMovedMyCheese #Change #GrowthMindset #AdaptAndOvercome #LifeLessons #EmbraceChange #FindYourCheese #PersonalDevelopment #CareerGrowth

Welp, John Poore tagged me to share my #DefiantOriginStory so here it goes… I grew up in Northern California, in the greater Sacramento area. My father was a store manager for a local grocery retail chain and he was so good at his job that they kept moving him to troubled stores so he could turn them around. This meant that my family moved a lot. In fact, I attended a new elementary school every year until I was in the 6th grade! While it was difficult at the time, the constant change taught me how to make fast friends in new environments. When I moved to Tucson, Arizona to start my college experience, my Dad helped me unload my boxes into my dorm room. As he set down the last box he looked at me and said “Well, I’ve got a plane to catch…good luck!” and with a wink and a smile he headed out. At that very moment I realized that I didn’t know a single person in the state of Arizona. Leaning back on the social skills I learned in my younger days really help me make new friends and find my place (rushing and pledging the Sigma Chi fraternity didn’t hurt either). After graduating with a degree in Accounting I joined the workforce and started my first professional job as an auditor for Ernst & Young. During my time at EY I learned what “long hours” really meant, often working in excess of 100 hour weeks. Auditing large organizations allowed me to understand how different businesses in vastly different industries actually made money. That job also taught me, a 22 year old kid, how to confidently sit in a room and speak with C-level executives about their financial performance. The skills and lessons learned at my time in public accounting are truly invaluable (and I recommend all young people entering the workforce start their professional journey in a similar type of role). After public accounting I joined Raley’s (the same grocery retailer that my Dad worked at for 30 years) in their strategic planning and budgets department. This job allowed me to learn new ways to use statistics to forecast financial data. It also helped me truly hone my analytical skillset, where I would spend my days evaluating store and product performance. Why did toilet paper sales tank in this store in the last quarter? Oh, a Wal Mart just opened across the street! This job taught me the importance of understanding the key business drivers behind the numbers. I couldn’t just come to my boss with a report that showed an increase or decrease, I needed to know the “why did it happen?” and the “so what should we do with this information?”. The art of storytelling was also practiced consistently as I learned to be more concise and refine the messaging I relayed to the higher ups. More in the comments due to word count restrictions...
