🗣 "Breeders need to access genetic material from others to remain as efficient as possible in breeding future varieties. At the same time, we need to find the right balance between access to innovation and IP protection. Therefore, we strive for a fair balance between plant variety protection (an IP right customized to plant breeding) and patents. We use different tools depending on the situation and needs, always trying to ensure that research and development are not hindered. For this reason, we are founding members of the Agricultural Crop Licensing Platform (ACLP), to ensure access to novel patented traits including NGTs." Join us on 31st of May for the SRA webinar series. Featuring Dr Jason Eglinton, SRA General Manager - Variety Development, presenting on ‘From Barley to Sugarcane, Challenges and Prospects’. Developing new varieties is a complex and slow process requiring continuous innovation and technical improvement to ensure the performance of future products is superior to what the industry has available today. Technical and tactical changes made to the breeding program over the past seven years will be outlined in an assessment of the current state of SRA plant breeding. New initiatives will be introduced and context provided on how they can improve rates of genetic gain. The practical application of genomic selection, introgression and fast-track technologies will be described in providing a view of the short and medium-term outlook for variety development at SRA. WHEN: 31 May 2pm-3.15pm REGISTER: https://lnkd.in/gQyb7DPN #sugarresearchaustralia #sugarindustry Mackay Area Productivity Services (MAPS) Bundaberg Sugar Ltd Mackay Sugar Wilmar Sugar Australia Limited Isis Central Sugar Mill Company Limited MSF Sugar Australian Research Council Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland) Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) CANEGROWERS Australia Canegrowers Mackay TULLY SUGAR LIMITED

🌱 Plant varieties develop with CGIAR #germplasm have been instrumental in feeding a large number of people living in difficult and exposed environments. ⚠️ However, the ability to maximize the outcomes of #cropbreeding relies on finding effective approaches to deal with the persistently slow adoption of improved plant varieties. 🔍 To tackle this challenge, we need to gather more information about the changing preferences and needs of farmers, processors, and consumers. This includes gaining a better understanding of what they want and require. 🌱 To do so, CGIAR's Initiative on Market Intelligence works with teams with different areas of expertise to collect market intelligence and support the development of #cropbreeding and #seed systems 📢 With this aim, the Initiative developed a new publication series: the Market Intelligence Briefs (MIB) Each piece is concise, avoids technical jargon, and presents conclusions in a clear and decisive manner. In 2022 the first two editions of the MIB series were published, both led by International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) researchers and available on-line! 🎉 Discover them here 👉 https://shorturl.at/fowx6
