Interesting that mass layoffs didn't start until the 80s. This trend is unfortunately still alive and well today. Before accepting a job look into whether or not the perspective employer has used this tactic in the past and how many times. If the leadership is willing to do mass layoffs, especially multiple times, then this says a lot about how they see and treat their employees. Might be a good idea to research and take this into consideration.
