Stainless steel is an important material in engineering and construction, playing an essential role in our present world. However, the impact of this industry is not exclusively positive, considering that it is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, currently ranking among the top three. This is the reason why urgent action is needed to reduce emissions and achieve a net-zero carbon economy by 2050. On average, the production of one ton of steel results in 1.85 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to approximately 8% of global carbon emissions. To reduce that impact, various methods have been proposed to achieve a decarbonized steel value chain. These include: 👉 advancements in mining technology, 👉 the use of hydrogen-based steelmaking, and 👉 technologies for carbon capture. Also, steelmakers are adopting direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnaces (EAF) based on hydrogen and renewable electricity to meet emission reduction goals. However continuous cooperation across the stainless steel value chain is necessary to address and mitigate this environmental impact. For example, the transition to cleaner and more innovative production, as well as the development and implementation of carbon capture and storage technology in the stainless steel industry, requires significant capital investment and supportive policy initiatives. Finally, global coordination to generate awareness of opportunities and risks associated with decarbonization is essential. In the Great Lakes region, investments in ore-based technologies could help maintain high-quality jobs, offer an opportunity for employment growth, and contribute to the health and financial stability of local communities. Recent federal #legislation represents a unique and significant opportunity to de-risk investments, spur #innovation, and secure #demand in this sector. That said, states and economic developers have a critical role to play in determining the industry’s outlook and its impact across the region. Capitalizing on federal incentives and recent technological advancements requires aggressive action. Thus, #policymakers and economic development organizations (#EDOs) in the region are well positioned to: 🏭 provide a steel-specific regional and comprehensive #strategy to guide and maximize industry efforts; 🏭 leverage #investments and #regulatory frameworks as catalysts for bold and complementary action; and 🏭 ensure the industry’s #competitiveness while promoting regional #development and delivering economic benefits to local communities. Steel is an absolute necessity to a modern society. Decarbonizing it at scale is extremely difficult, and this tour at United States Steel Corporation provided an understanding why! Having said that, it is imperative to do so by funding innovative technologies and giving them a realistic path to scaling and commercialization.

This is our second article about the advantages of alternative raw materials. 🚀 We continue the topic (vol. 1 is at https://lnkd.in/gPmMeJQ ), and today let’s talk about the mineral (metal-free) part of the slag. The cement industry is one of the main industries in terms of waste consumption, including metallurgical waste. 📌 Cement production is constantly growing and, accordingly, a large amount of raw materials is required. The granulated slag generated during the production process is already a standard raw material for cement production. But now requirements to reduce carbon emissions will significantly affect the cement industry! 🌍 Already in 2025-2026, a new plant for the production of steel from iron ore will be launched in Germany, which will not have a blast furnace (we plan to describe the process in subsequent posts, stay in touch). This means that the formation of granulated slag will be reduced. And with a reduction in granulated slag formation, questions arise. What's the future of slag? How will it align with cement production? ❗ At the same time, a large amount of air cooled slag has already been buried and is constantly being formed in the world, which is not as popular for cement enterprises as GBFS, but in vain. Our partners have already illuminated the path, showing that air cooled slag can replace up to 30% of raw materials not only without loss of cement quality, but moreover, reduce carbon dioxide emissions: ✔ In the production of clinker, due to the use of slag from metallurgical production, CO2 emissions are reduced by 20% (in comparance to the standard raw material mix). ✔ Heat consumption is reduced to 2.73 GJ/t ✔ The specific consumption of raw materials per 1 ton of clinker is reduced ✔ And, as a result, energy consumption is reduced 💡 If you are interested, we can make a video call with you, tell you more about this technology and how to implement this material in a cement plant. Friday Innovation Snippets: Advancements in decarbonizing cement production. #greencement #climateinnovation #decarbonization #sustainability Every year over 4 billion tons of #cement are used worldwide. The production of all this cement emits almost 3 billion tons of CO2 emissions per year. Thyssen Krupp has developed a carbon capture technology, polysius® pure oxyfuel, to drastically reduce the emissions from cement production. Most of the #cementindustry 's emissions come from the production of cement clinker, which is the step in the process of manufacturing cement where limestone is converted into lime. This involves heating the materials in a kiln, which releases hot gas exhaust streams. Normally, ambient air is used in the kiln combustion process but this introduces nitrogen into the process, which makes it costly and difficult to capture carbon from the exhaust gas. Thyssen Krupp’s polysius pure oxyfuel technology involves using pure oxygen in the clinker production process to increase the concentration of carbon in the exhaust stream, so that it can be captured and not be released into the atmosphere.
