Our annual Britvic plc Soft Drinks Review was released yesterday, and as a category it’s always so interesting to see the changing consumer behaviours that shape our brands. Our report found that: ·       Category sales in grocery and convenience stores have grown, demonstrating the dedication and ingenuity of manufacturers and retailers as well as the wide range of roles soft drinks are playing in people's lives. We have witnessed the soft drink category expand rapidly at forecourts, where sales have grown by 9.9% on volumes up 1.6%.  ·       There is a rise in people using forecourts for a wider range of purposes, like top-up shopping and on-the-go treats. All this presents significant opportunities for soft drinks, the channel’s bestselling food and drink category.  ·       Retailers increasingly recognise that the soft drinks they stock help determine people’s choice of store. On Monday night, BBC Panorama aired an investigation that revealed some eye-opening findings about supermarket price-matching. They found that many of Tesco’s products, which claim to be price-matched with Aldi, are not like-for-like. The programme, which aired on BBC One, highlighted that nearly a third of Tesco’s matched products contain less of the main ingredient compared to Aldi’s. This really reinforces what we’ve always believed: Aldi is the only supermarket where you can count on both top-quality products and low prices. Greggs reports Q1 sales growth 👏 The British bakery chain has announced a 7.4% increase in revenue for the first quarter of 2024. Continuing its strong strategic and operational progress which is driven by store expansion and strong performance across all channels, Greggs reported revenue of £693m, up from £609m taken in the same period last year. Star performers across its product portfolio included its bakery items, pizza boxes and the expansion of its vegan offerings. The company also opened 64 new stores during the quarter, taking its total estate up to 2,500 in the UK, with a target of adding up to 160 more by the end of the year. Roisin Currie, CEO of Greggs, commented: "There is so much for us to get after in the UK, hence the confidence that we’ve got around all the different growth levers that we’re currently working on." "I think we’re quite a humble brand, so we’re not at all arrogant enough to believe it’s simply because we love the product range in the UK that we should expect other countries across the world to love that product range." Low & no alcohol is a hot topic this month, with Dry January in full swing, so we decided to look deeper into our grocery pricing database to understand how retailers are approaching this key category. 📆🍻   As these charts show, there’s some interesting patterns in price movements when comparing the price movements on low & no alcohol SKUs versus their full-strength equivalents. 📊💹 Take the example of Asda - across a sample of full strength packaged beer SKUs there’s been just 17 price movements between October 2022 and December 2023. However, for their low & no alcohol equivalents, there’s been a massive 55 price movements over the same time-period! 🔄 The significant difference in the number of price movements here suggests retailers are trying to work out how they use no & low alcohol products to benefit the price architecture of their broader packaged beer category, as well as grappling with what’s the most appropriate price positioning for low & no alcohol brands. 🤔💰   HDI's pricing databases now cover all major grocers, as well as c.15k hospitality venues. Don't Interrupt The Shopping Experience When done correctly, endcap displays reduce clutter and improve customer flow.  End caps (end-of-aisle) are important promotional locations in foodservice environment that rely on "retail-like" impulse sales or grab-n-go strategies to satisfy customer needs. Sales generated by items displayed at these locations are estimated to be up to 30% of total sales. The quick in-n-out consumers are most likely not going down every aisle.
