Recently on my flight from Pune to Hyderabad, I had a pleasant encounter with the director of DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, Mr. GRM Rao. We had a refreshing talk on the much anticipated defense sector and the rising technologies in it. He recollected and shared his anecdotes on how the landscape has changed over the years and, how India is cruising towards becoming a global powerhouse in manufacturing and exporting aerospace and defense technologies. India also has her eyes set on claiming a spot amongst top 5 global producers in this space with a target of US $5 billion by 2025. The target is simple REDUCE IMPORTS. This dream was backed by the data recently shared by Rajnath Singh in April: "Defense exports have touched a record Rs 21,083 crore (approx. US$ 2.63 Billion) in the Financial Year (FY) 2023-24, a growth of 32.5% over the last fiscal when the figure was Rs 15,920 crore. The recent figures indicate that the defense exports have grown by 31 times in the last 10 years as compared to FY 2013-14." Apart from the defense sector Mr. Rao also touched upon the upcoming companies and the roadblocks in sunrising sectors such as solar, wind and, electronics. Also he was humble and kind enough to take out the time and give me guidance on my career and share his card. Kudos to the ones spearheading this dream. "Tamil Nadu has the requisite infrastructure and skilled workforce, to potentially drive the mission of the Government of Tamil Nadu to make the state a potential destination for #investors for setting up the manufacturing units," says Dr. Vinod Surana, Managing Partner & CEO, Surana & Surana International Attorneys India Attorneys, who had conceptualised, advocated and was instrumental in bringing the Defence Manufacturing Corridor to Tamil Nadu. At a TIIC-SIDM Conclave, @Mr Hans Raj Verma IAS, Addl. Chief Secretary, Chairman & MD, Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation, acknowledged the contribution Dr Surana had made in the establishment of the TN Defence Corridor. The MOU signed between TIIC and SIDM is an encouraging development towards this effort. The Tamil Nadu Aerospace and Defence Policy, 2022, launched by the Chief Minister aims to attract investments worth Rs 75,000 crore and generate one lakh jobs over a period of 10 years.
