"How do people feel after interacting with you?" Jacob Jensen posted this thoughtful question today. He points out, "If they feel confident and capable, you have an invaluable skill." At the end of your meetings with someone you're trying to persuade or collaborate with - how do they feel? Does the conversation potentially leave them feeling judged and "less than"? Or do they leave that meeting feeling inspired, empowered, and looking forward to working with you? Influence comes from trust, which starts with the other person trusting that we have good intentions toward them. I've had many times in my career where I demonstrated a lot of competence, but fell short in making sure the other person could feel that I genuinely cared about them and what they think. There's a great quote often associated with Maya Angelou: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
