I enjoyed an interesting discussion panel last night with the B Corp collection of brands from drinks agency Glass Half Full including Nc'nean Distillery Maison Mirabeau l B Corp™ Everleaf Drinks | B Corp Two Drifters Distillery Sapling Spirits Double Dutch Drinks | B Corp Quarter | B Corp. Two key things stood out to me. 1) Significant change can only come through government regulation, the amazing work being done by these challenger brands doesn't really move the needle and better environmental practices need to be adopted by the whole industry and that will only come through regulation. 2) A quote from Annabel Thomas that the right choices for the business regarding environmental decisions have proved to be the right choice for the company. Two examples given were powering the distillery using biomass from sustainably harvested trees sourced near the distillery (given the huge increase in power costs over recent years) and insisting on using 100% recyclable glass as consumers love the distinctive bottle style. I learnt a bit about regenerative farming, carbon offsetting vs insetting and it is encouraging to see that the environmental benefits these companies are creating are helping to drive their growing and successful businesses. Thank you Glass Half Full for the opportunity. Looking forward to working with some of these brands on our B-Corp bar this summer with Dover Yard this summer.

Great to speak to the Emergent Generation (https://lnkd.in/eAui_DdN), asking the question what can your council do for food? Highlighted the potential for dynamic procurement to offer opportunities for small and medium-sized growers to access local authority food procurement. Discussed action being taken by Combined Authorities to improve local food systems from free school meals to unhealthy food advertising, as well as the work of local food partnerships. Also noted the unique position of food within the latest North East Combined Authority devolution deal including the pledge to “create a regional food covenant or charter to help boost local production” and the ambition to “deliver an agri-food and drink event in the region in 2024/25 to showcase innovation, scale, and growth potential of industry in the region.”

A new program in 2024/25 - VinØ Carbon Action - will progress the Tasmanian wine sector's journey towards a net zero carbon emissions future, helping wine businesses measure, reduce and report on their emissions activities. Working with the ERC Protocol, Wine Tasmania's wine business members can measure their emissions profile, take steps to reduce emissions and communicate their commitments to all stakeholders. We have also jointly developed actions tailored to the wine sector.
