Do your patients suffer from chronic pain and daytime fatigue? The connection may surprise you! 😮 A groundbreaking international study led by my colleague and mentor Dr. Steven Olmos reveals a compelling link between craniofacial pain and excessive daytime sleepiness. This means your patients' jaw pain, headaches, or even that pesky jaw locking could be a red flag for underlying sleep issues! Conducted across 11 international treatment centers, this study examined over 1,000 patients with chronic pain and/or sleep-related breathing disorders. They found a striking correlation between certain craniofacial pain symptoms and high scores on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Surprisingly, jaw locking was identified as a strong predictor of daytime sleepiness. This research emphasizes the interconnectedness of craniofacial pain and sleep health. It also highlights the importance of comprehensive assessment and treatment for patients experiencing both. By addressing the underlying sleep disorder, we can often alleviate craniofacial pain and improve overall well-being. If your patients complain of both pain and fatigue, it's time to delve deeper! A comprehensive sleep assessment may uncover hidden sleep disorders contributing to their pain. 👍 If you want to understand the system to start to recognize and treat these disorders, join us for our next Mini Residency in September! You'll leave this comprehensive training course with an understanding of how pain and sleep are connected and why you need to understand one to treat the other. Let's begin a discussion below! Eli Lilly's recent announcement reveals compelling results from their latest study on tirzepatide, showing a significant reduction in the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among adults with obesity—a mean reduction of 63% in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). This finding raises an essential question: Does tirzepatide directly impact OSA, or is the effect primarily mediated through weight loss? Understanding this distinction is crucial as adherence to CPAP, the standard treatment, remains a challenge for many patients. In addition to analyzing clinical trial data, generating real-world evidence from recent claims data could provide deeper insights into tirzepatide’s mechanisms. This approach would help clarify its broader implications for health policy and treatment strategies, potentially offering a dual-benefit treatment strategy for patients struggling with both obesity and OSA. I look forward to discussing how these innovations might enhance patient outcomes and healthcare efficiencies. Insights from colleagues and experts at Eli Lilly are particularly welcome as we consider the future of OSA treatment. https://lnkd.in/ebirPYJW #tirzepatide #Zepbound #Mounjaro #OSA #obesity Eli Lilly and Company Gregory Daniel Haijun Tian Christian Nguyen Kristina Boye Boye Mark

This pilot study explores the feasibility and potential impact of Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT) on sleep quality among patients with end-stage renal disease who are undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. By investigating the feasibility, the study aims to determine if EFT can be effectively integrated into the treatment regimen of these patients. Additionally, the study seeks to shed light on the potential benefits of EFT in enhancing sleep quality, a crucial aspect of well-being often compromised in individuals with end-stage renal disease. The findings from this research could offer valuable insights into alternative approaches to improving the overall quality of life for this patient population. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gEFEndG9

1moI couldn’t agree more. There are serious consequences associated with insomnia. One factor worth considering is simply the view of the patient. Insomnia is, by definition, intermittent. This can reduce the apparent “need” for the patient to mention it to their provider. It also reinforces strongly the feeling that it might be going away. As to this a lack of desire to be medicate and you’ve created a serious problem with underdiagnosis and treatment.
