Our Partners, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and The Biggest Little Bee City, are organizing a Saturday Morning Cleanup to support Reno’s pollinator habitats at Valley Wood Park on August 3rd from 8 to 11 am.  Why should we support pollinators? They act as the glue that holds an ecosystem together. Without them, that system would suffer, shrinking the biodiversity around us. They provide pollination services for over 85% of the world’s flowering plants.  Two-thirds of the world’s crop species depend on pollinators, and the United States alone grows over 100 crops that need or benefit from pollinators. Mangroves aren't just trees—they're lifelines for our coastlines, marine biodiversity, and our planet's health. They are critical nurseries for juvenile reef fish like tarpon and redfish, and for invertebrates like shrimp and clams. As sea levels rise and development increases, their protection is more crucial than ever. The Mangrove Ranger program empowers volunteers to monitor mangrove health and report violations, providing vital data for advocacy efforts. MISTY MORNING ON THE RIVER FARRAR I think this must be the ultimate example of what "RIVERWOODS" is all about; the mature riparian woodland that overhangs and shades the water, harbouring insects of all kinds in a healthy ecosystem which benefits the threatened salmon and all the other species that live in or by running water. Where riparian woods are missing and being planted, I suspect that in most instances they need protection against deer, which may limit how close you can get the trees to the water. I hope that where this is being done, some schemes will be monitored, so that we may learn how they progress and how long it all takes. When the time comes to remove the deer-fences, as Bill Cowie pointed out recently beavers will probably have moved in from the various sites where they are now being introduced. While many of us are happy to see more beavers, it does, very definitely, mean that individual trees in every new riparian wood will have to be protected against them. Even initiatives which appear to be straightforward and natural have unintended consequences, which need to be taken into account, and remedial measures planned in.

And now something for Friday afternoon😉   Bricklayers take care of swifts and other birds that like to live in the crevices of the facades of city buildings. Road workers build culverts for amphibians and fences to stop stag beetles from appearing on the road. But us… as we are building in the heart of Gdynia, right next to the Presidential Wharf, so practically right by the sea - we have to take care of... seals! A few days ago, while inspecting the seawater well, we noticed a trapped seal on the jet ski platform. The seal got stuck in the rollers of the platform and could not leave it. After a very quick consultation with the Port of Gdynia, the local WWF team members saved the seal from death and the population in the Baltic Sea did not decrease! We were so proud to have saved the poor seal until… the next day, when the released animal appeared again in the same place. Experts assessed that he was in good shape and apparently simply liked the place! The guards just need to make sure that he doesn't beg walkers for food, because definitely human snacks wouldn’t do him well.
