When communities need emergency recovery, CDFIs are the financial first responders. In the aftermath of a natural disaster or unexpected crisis, moderate- to low-income communities often don't have the resources to bounce back as quickly. #CDFIs aid in recovery efforts by providing loans to keep small businesses and nonprofits going and to help rebuild or repair homes, businesses, hospitals, and community centers. They can help finance things such as infrastructure projects (as seen in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria in 2017), or rebuilding whole areas (seen in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005). During the COVID-19 crisis when lockdowns impacted local economies, CDFIs helped many small businesses stay afloat. Increasing the presence of CDFIs in communities lacking coverage is a way to increase community security and prepare for future disasters before they occur. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gQwxcacu

🌀🔥🌪️ Good post, and good screenshots from the NYT on how the US' disaster system is a mess. It lines up with our series "Big Chaos, Big Change". The US is not set up well for multiple simultaneous major disasters or catastrophes. https://lnkd.in/gAhMHEcm
I over-emphasized Response. That was a mistake. Recovery is more complex. It involves many stakeholders. And it can last indefinitely. If I could go back as a local Emergency Manager, here’s what I’d do differently: ✅ Shift 80% of our team’s annual goals to focus on recovery and mitigation. ✅ Set up a dedicated fiduciary organization to manage the Disaster Relief Fund. ✅ Build monthly connections with new local and state partners essential for recovery. ✅ Increase efforts to engage marginalized populations in the community. ✅ Better educate and prepare local stakeholders on FEMA’s reimbursement process. Recovery operations are exhausting. The Federal government keeps improving its support for disaster survivors. But I’ve noticed something about successful locals in this space: They aggressively prioritize what’s closest to home. B/c that’s where they have the most influence.

Did you know? The number of deaths caused by natural disasters rose to 74,000 in 2023, well above the annual average of the last five years (10,000) - with damages of around $250 billion worldwide, according to data from Munich Re. This #EarthDay, be sure you are ready to take care of your employees who may be impacted by disaster or hardship by launching a relief fund: https://lnkd.in/eJeAbFas

Helene has inflicted destruction that will be felt for generations. Now is the time to saves lives and protect property. We thank our tireless first responders for their service and dedication. Soon though, communities will shift their focus to recovery. FEMA's Public Assistance program will be the financial lifeline for many of these communities. However, Immediate Needs Funding restrictions on the Disaster Relief Fund and uncertainty regarding its full replenishment will likely cause an extended reimbursement timeline for all services awaiting funding from FEMA's Public Assistance program. This can hurt local governments, nonprofits, as well as their contractors and subcontractors. Disaster Relief Strategies can help bridge that gap for eligible nonprofits and local governments. https://lnkd.in/eygn-k34
