Did you know organizations that support BIPOC/marginalized communities are now being sued? Why? Because the repeal of affirmative action in higher education opened the door for things like this to happen... There's an organization called Hello Alice that has worked to ensure every entrepreneur can access the capital and networks needed to grow. Hello Alice is founded on the principle of equality, with the aim of ensuring that everyone — women, men, people of color, U.S. Veterans, and more — has an equal opportunity to launch their businesses and pursue the American Dream. They recently became the subject of a lawsuit by America First Legal (AFL), led by Stephen Miller, and Jonathan Mitchell. ❗The lawsuit claims that their work with Progressive Insurance (which resulted in offering $25,000 grants to ten Black-owned small businesses) violates civil rights. The activists at AFL are using their lawsuit against Hello Alice to support their efforts to fundraise. ❗Hello Alice is not the first to be targeted — AFL has taken legal actions against programs benefiting Native American, Latino, and Black small business owners, even pulling funding from U.S. Veterans. ❗ In AFL’s own words, it claims "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" are "gentle-sounding euphemisms [that] are designed to mask a brute force agenda of social engineering, Marxist dehumanization, and overt racism and sexism." What's Hello Alice doing about it? They've set an audacious goal to lift up 5 million small businesses from every corner of the country, making it impossible for AFL and others to ignore the value and commitment of our small business community. ✅ Here's what you can do to support DEI efforts. Help spread the word by tagging, nominating, or inviting 5 other small businesses below to apply directly today for the American Dream Awards and Grant program. By sharing our stories on social media, using the hashtag #ElevateTheAmericanDream, we can do what we can to BE the change the world needs now. ✅ Hello Alice has distributed over $38M in grants, provided connections for millions of dollars in credit and loans, and mentored 1.3 million SMBs. 🔊 The link to apply for funding or nominate a small business is below. 👇 Do it for you. Do it for everyone who needs to be heard. I'm doing it for my daughter — and the world she will inherit. #DEI #AANHPI #AAPI #BIPOC #WOC #womenentrepreneurs #smallbusiness #divorcedmom

🚨💰GRANT ALERT PHILLY ‼️ Some Philly businesses could get $50K boost from the city WHYY - The city of Philadelphia revived its Boost Your Business program that helps historically disadvantaged business owners for at least one more year. The Commerce Department program seeks to connect with businesses constrained by lack of capital but with the potential to grow. There’s enough money for 20 businesses to get $50,000 in forgivable loans; each is converted into a grant after hitting certain milestones. Here are a few rules: Businesses must already be generating at least $350,000 in annual revenue, be in operation for three years or longer, and be majority-owned by individuals who have faced racial or ethnic prejudice or cultural bias. "Case in point: the indirect, non-transparent, downright passive-aggressive culture that is found in many nonprofits. It is not the culture of nice people, but of those with the privilege to wield power behind the scenes. It’s similar to the culture of politics: savvy politicians refrain from making open and direct statements because the less people know, the more likely they are to retain their seats and their political power. In contrast, POC have lived most of our lives outside circles of power. Our greatest tools are the truth, our voices and organizing. Silence is the privilege of the powerful. If that’s a part of your organizational culture then POC will not only be tokenized, but also be forced to either subjugate themselves to your implicit control, or risk speaking out and being accused of being uppity / confrontational / not a good fit." https://lnkd.in/eXrf_9MK #societyandculture #socialissues #businessandmanagement

An honest conversations about the #racialwealthgap acknowledges how many of us have benefited from policies and practices that harmed people of color. I own a home in a neighborhood that once had discriminatory racial covenants, just as my grandparents did. On a grander scale, so many philanthropic fortunes were built by extracting resources from communities of color. Investing in racial equity is both a moral imperative and good economic policy: studies show that closing the racial wealth gap could add $5 trillion to the U.S. GDP over the next five years. These authors astutely write that funders should use their resources to help catalyze paradigm shifts towards shared prosperity. I believe this must include both acknowledging past injustices and funding systems-change work and power-building. #RacialEquity #EconomicJustice #Philanthropy

To help ensure an equitable future for all, we must consider how to create opportunity for the 77M Americans with criminal records. Since its launch in 2019, the Justice and Mobility Fund—a collaboration between Blue Meridian Partners, Ford Foundation, and Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies—has made significant investments in solutions aimed at increasing economic and social mobility for people impacted by the criminal justice system. Recently, the #JusticeandMobility Fund invested $34.5M in six additional strategies that are focused on expanding opportunities post-incarceration while addressing the unique needs of justice-impacted individuals. We’re so excited to support these leaders as they test and refine their strategies and prepare for transformative growth! iDEIntity fam - we finally have a community name for all of our supporters 🎉. On the marketing end, we are obsessed with finding creative ways to integrate DEI into common words. We unapologetically stand on our mission, which is to improve the collective DEI outcomes of the entrepreneurial and small business workforce. So, from henceforth, our community will be referred to as the "riDEIrs," because we ride for DEI ✊🏽. Why #riDEIrs 🤔? 💛 It's a fun name and derives from the concept of "riding", which means to go hard for something, to express a deeply held value 🤎 "Riding" for someone or something is a term used in African American Vernacular English (AAVE), which further underscores our commitment to racial equity and cultural inclusion 💛 It places DEI in the center, which further supports our mission of making DEI accessible to founders and individuals of various backgrounds Welcome, riDEIrs! Let's create a future where DEI is accessible to everyone ⚡️. #diversity #equity #inclusion #community #nonprofit #startup

The United States is approaching levels of inequality not seen since the Gilded Age more than 100 years ago. According to Bridgespan, “White households at the median hold six times the wealth of Black households, five times the wealth of Hispanic households, and more than 10 times the wealth of Native American households.” The Bridgespan Group interviewed MAF CEO José Quiñonez as part of their latest research that included over 50 philanthropists, impact investors, and social entrepreneurs pioneering new models of wealth creation in communities of color. ➡ MAF was recognized as an organization narrowing and providing solutions to address the racial wealth gap through innovative social lending programs that help low-income and immigrant communities build credit. Discussing MAF’s Lending Circle program Jose said, “We help people build and improve their credit scores and through that, they can have better access to loans at prime rates. When their borrowing costs go down, they’re able to manage their money better and realize their full potential.” — José Quiñonez, Founder And CEO, Mission Asset Fund 🔗 Read the complete report here: https://lnkd.in/eBcVSAR9

“…too frequently, families of color are excluded from the credit-building cycle altogether. Black and Latinx people—especially those in low-income neighborhoods—are statistically more likely to be among the 26 million ‘credit invisible’ Americans, meaning they have no credit history with any nationwide reporting agencies… …Working primarily with low-income women of color, Grameen America, Inc. helps them build businesses by providing access to affordable credit, resources, and financial education. A core focus of its program is bridging the credit gap.” We're proud to support Grameen America!
