Today we offer a warm welcome to the two newest Members of OCEaN - North and Baltic Seas: EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and Danmarks Naturfredningsforening! 🔷 💡 EnBW is an experienced #offshore wind developer committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2035 while the Danish Society for Nature Conservation is Denmark's largest #nature conservation and environmental organisation. We look forward to collaborating with EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and Danmarks Naturfredningsforening in OCEaN - North & Baltic Seas on our shared priority to accelerate nature-friendly offshore wind and #grids and support the joint achievement of #climate and #biodiversity targets. 💬 Holger Grubel, Head of Portfolio Development Offshore Wind, EnBW, emphasised on joining OCEaN that “the preservation of biodiversity is a central component of environmental protection and a sustainable offshore wind development. Convinced that these goals cannot be achieved alone, we look forward to working with OCEaN and its members to develop solutions for protecting the marine biodiversity while installing more offshore wind capacity." 💬 Lars Midtiby, Director, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, noted they are “dedicated to conserving nature for future generations, addressing the biodiversity crisis, and ensuring a just transition to renewable energy sources. Joining the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature enhances our efforts to combat climate change and protect our environment. We are excited about this opportunity to strengthen our work on these critical issues." 📣 Read the full announcement 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekvUXt3H

Climate change is the main driver of biodiversity loss, but the power sector can help restore nature. How? Join us for the launch of #PowerPlant 2.0 to find out 👉 https://bit.ly/3QzTWyq With renewable projects that integrate nature protection in their design, the power sector can lower risks to biodiversity by up to 75% and contribute to saving more than €5 trillion of climate-change-induced global economic losses. With WSP, we developed a set of 12 principles for biodiversity integration combined with qualitative success factors and quantitative methods. Join us in Brussels on 13th June for the launch of Power Plant 2.0 presented by Jonny Miller. It will be followed by a high-level discussion with Tina Sersen, State Secretary of Slovenia's Ministry of the Environment, Climate & Energy, Noor Yafai, Humberto Rosa, Bruce Douglas, and Kristian Ruby as well as case studies presentations and a policy panel - all moderated by Philippa Nuttall. 🗓 13 June 📍 Eurelectric Secretariat, Brussels WSP in the UK | Kristian Ruby | Cillian O'Donoghue | Marianne Karu | Paul Wilczek | Aida García | Adrian Lindermuth | Val Armstrong | Philippa Nuttall | Sustainable Views | Humberto Rosa | European Commission | Tina Sersen | Noor Yafai | The Nature Conservancy | Bruce Douglas | Global Renewables Alliance | Andrew Allan | SSE Renewables | Geoff Hamilton | ESB Networks | Gundula Konrad | VERBUND AG | Jochen Hauff | BayWa r.e. Policymakers must act with urgency and ambition to enable and incentivise a biodiversity-positive energy transition. Meeting global climate and biodiversity goals will require both unprecedented expansion of renewable energy infrastructure and unprecedented expansion of areas protected for nature. This represents a potential conflict – a fight for space. But it doesn’t have to. Biodiversity and climate are deeply interconnected. By reflecting this in our approach, and integrating positive action on biodiversity into the energy transition, we can unite and amplify action on both crises. To ensure action on biodiversity and the energy transition are mutually supportive, governments can: Integrate implementation of climate and biodiversity goals, sending clear and stable policy signals to spur action from energy developers. Incentivise investment in biodiversity-positive renewable energy to accelerate a transition that is right for biodiversity and climate. Great new marine protection ambition announced by #portugal! This exciting announcement comes on the eve of the forthcoming series of #europe's marine biogeographical regional seminars, where Member States will discuss the status of their pledges to #protectedarea and #conservation status targets, and the way forward. I am looking forward to joining the first of these in #dublin next week, for the #atlantic and macaronesian marine biogeographical regions, representing the MPA Europe Project. We hope the evidence we generate can support Member States and regional seas organisations in designating optimal networks of marine protected areas which benefit the maximum #biodiversity, from #species to #ecosystems, under a changing climate. #30by30 #marineprotection #sdg14 #ocean action is #climateaction

Marine-based carbon dioxide removal methods (mCDR) are now being seen as a potential solution to combat climate change. Seaweed cultivation and ocean alkalinity enhancement are new and promising, but how can we implement them? The ocean is too big and jurisdiction is complicated. But there is hope! Wil Burns and Romany Webb write on the recently agreed biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction treaty (BBNJ) that aims to safeguard marine biodiversity in areas and could majorly impact mCDR testing and deployment. This can ensure both climate benefits and marine ecosystem protection! What are your thoughts on the BBNJ treaty? The preservation of our marine ecosystems is a vital step in combating climate change as oceans naturally act as carbon storage, contain vast amounts of biodiversity, and contribute to economic development across the world. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are essential to protect these ecosystems, as they increase the recovery of fish stocks and improve carbon sequestration. The 30 by 30 initiative outlined at COP 15 recognised this, and aims to designate, among other things, 30 per cent of the world's oceans as marine protected areas. But how can we ensure that the push for more Offshore Wind doesn´t result in an encroachment on protected areas, and have long term negative impacts on the marine ecosystems of the Baltic Sea? This question and more will be addressed in our joint WWF and CCB Webinar “Can offshore wind go hand in hand with marine protection and restoration in the Baltic Sea?” on the 25th September 2023. Guess what? There is new plan to protect our Oceans! What is it about? 1. Marine conservation: €68 Billion of investments by 2030 2. Ocean renewable energy: 380 GW of ocean renewable energy by 2030 3. Shipping: 5% of zero emissions fuels in shipping by 2030 4. Aquatic food: €3.8 Billion to support resilient aquatic food systems 5. Coastal tourism & use of technology to help safeguard nature. But most importantly: nature-positive and net-zero future by 2050! Finally, nature is coming up on the agenda. I’ll be honest with you: I used to think carbon was the most important thing. But the more I look into science and work in nature, the more I see just how crucial it is. This plan was launched by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Let us hope this plan results in action and achieves what it sets to do! #sustainability #oceans #nature #future

Climate change and biodiversity loss are the global challenges of our time. How– and how fast– we address them has profound implications for humanity. There is an urgent opportunity for the energy transition to be a force for good on climate and biodiversity. How can we grasp this opportunity? 🎯 The entire energy industry must act now– in line with science– to decarbonise and integrate measurable action on biodiversity. 🤝 Environmental NGOs and the renewable energy industry must work together to find practical solutions that deliver on shared goals. 🌍 Policymakers must enable and incentivise an energy transition that advances climate and biodiversity goals together.
