Protect VIP raised concern over the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by three of the country’s developers of fossil gas – Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV), the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC), and San Miguel Corporation (SMC) with the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), reportedly to help conserve the critically biodiverse marine corridor. “If SMC, AEV, and MPIC are genuine in their “joint stewardship”, building a multibillion gas project that would only bring harm to the VIP shouldn’t push through in the first place. These three conglomerates can show their sincerity in protecting the VIP by stopping their fossil gas expansion plans, prioritizing instead the development of clean energy from renewables and helping contribute to building the resilience of marine and coastal biodiversity and communities,” said Gerry Arances, Executive Director of sustainability think-tank Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED), a co-convenor of Protect VIP. Bird and bat collisions in wind projects is often misunderstood by regulators and proponents alike. This IFC guide provides the tools to assess project impacts on critters, necessary for most project financing. #windenergy #projectfinance #ESG #biodiversity #environment
🌍💨 Exciting news! IFC - International Finance Corporation, EBRD, and KfW have developed a Handbook and Decision Support Tool to address the impacts of onshore wind energy facilities (WEFs) on wildlife, promoting a systematic approach to post-construction fatality monitoring (PCFM). Let's integrate biodiversity considerations into our decarbonized future. #renewableenergy #biodiversityconservation #windenergy #sustainability Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d9dbGbzA

Check out Nicole Yeomans, our Offshore Industrials and Shipping Lead, in the latest instalment of Nature Intelligence Views. Nicole explains that in the offshore sector, eDNA is quickly replacing the destructive environmental survey methods of the past. 🧬 🐟 eDNA is proving to be an absolute game-changer for companies with ambitious #NaturePositive targets, enabling them to track, monitor and measure the impacts of their restoration efforts. And what’s more, it’s quick, simple and low cost! To find out more, listen again to our recent webinar, sharing the results of a project undertaken with Natural Power and EDF Renewables UK & Ireland to compare trawl surveys to #eDNA-driven environmental impact surveys. https://lnkd.in/er4Fibhd #eDNA #NatureIntelligenceViews #OffshoreIndustrials #EnvironmentalImpactAssessments #Biodiversity #Sustainability #NatureIntelligence

Chevron to fund WA-based Carbon Sync, a company leading a soil carbon sequestration pilot project involving up to 80,000 hectares of WA’s cropping and grazing region. Chevron has also joined a multi-year research project with Deakin University’s Blue Carbon Lab to explore potential CO2 sequestration opportunities in WA’s coastal wetlands. Chevron Australia’s General Manager, Energy Transition, David Fallon said: “The two projects we are part of in WA are examples of the multiple pathways on that lower carbon journey. Our collaboration with Carbon Sync is expected to provide critical insights related to soil carbon projects, in a region with large potential for scale to help meet the forecasted demand for Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). “With the Blue Carbon Lab contribution, we are excited to explore the opportunities for blue carbon in WA’s saltmarsh, mangrove and seagrass environments.” Read on: https://ow.ly/Ajr250Pxe07

Great panel session organized by the Med OCEaN Coalition at WindEurope2024. The message is very clear, in order to achieve offshore wind and biodiversity targets in the Mediterranean we need to: · Implement Ecosystem-Based Maritime Spatial Planning · Address cumulative impacts · Improve stakeholder engagement at all levels · Address the gaps of the national regulatory frameworks Thanks Renewables Grid Initiative for the organization!

In a statement yesterday the Nordic Committee for Sustainability, a committee of parliamentarians under the Nordic Council, highlighted that the Nordic region should be a leading example of how offshore wind power can be developed without conflict with local communities or biodiversity. "The Nordic Region must take a leading role in expanding offshore wind power while safeguarding fisheries and nature," says Ola Elvestuen, Chair of the Nordic Committee for Sustainability. Several of the Nordic countries are currently investigating the possibility of building offshore wind power to speed up the transition from fossil fuel dependence to renewable energy. However, in many places the plans are being held back by slow authorisation processes, technical challenges and safety and environmental issues. Nordic Energy Research has worked extensively with co-existence and nature-inclusive design in Nordic offshore wind farms. In March of this year, we presented a report which explores the possibilities and challenges of developing offshore wind power without conflict with local communities, biodiversity, or other stakeholders. We look forward to continue to work together within the Nordic cooperation in these important matters. https://lnkd.in/ggYZPrzq Wind farms in the tropics, especially the Cairns region of North Queensland, are not only environmentally destructive, but are also incompatible with natural low wind latitudes; and naturally destructive, high wind cyclone seasons that threaten the region every other December through April.

Absolutely great visit and tour of Port of Aberdeen #SouthHarbour. Very much appreciative of the time and hospitality of Roddy James and Roy Buchan. The size, scope, and scale of the infrastructure can only really be appreciated up close and it’s extremely impressive, what an achievement. Fascinating to learn and observe how the Harbour fits into #decarbonisation pathways: - Facilitation of decarbonisation of primary energy, e.g. hosting vessels for the full offshore wind ecosystem and value chain. - Potential for key component of carbon sequestration through support for #ccus projects - Support of the emission reductions of the vessels/shipping/freight through future enablement of #hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives/#ammonia for clean shipping fuels As well as several other modalities that can aid in aggressive net zero targets. Extremely encouraging to see and a trailblazer in the decarbonisation of transportation. Of course, still very much supporting current processes ref the Noble Intrepid behind.
