Great time this week at the GreenTech conference in Barcelona, by Port Technology International - PTI, hearing across the spectrum about port challenges and solutions for decarbonisation, electrification and our collective mission for the sector. Some key takeaways to share... 1. Green is supported by technology - smarter ports can measure & manage energy and emissions and deploy efficiency tools, such as JiT vessel arrivals 2. Sustainability-linked finance is key for port investor market which will drive up lower-carbon port developments 3. CSRD is the new baseline (in Europe) for sustainability & transition reporting, but we can and must go beyond 4. Electrification everywhere - this needs a collaborative effort between grid, ports, terminals to build infrastructure - but on-port microgrids are part of the answer too 5. Alternative fuels for shipping is led (on balance) by methanol, but supply needs public subsidy and leading regulations, to approach parity with marine diesel, to become established 6. Design of container terminals needs to focus more on electric networks (for all that battery-equipment) and maximise use of space and assets to reduce embedded carbon in the infrastructure 7. [ NEWS ] We're delighted to announce that #REFRESH has achieved its 1st #milestone! This is major step towards the project’s goal of demonstrating a smart, circular solution for managing end-of-use #wind turbine #blades. Minister Leonore Gewessler from the Bundesministerium für Klimaschutz, Umwelt, Energie, Mobilität, Innovation & Technologie in Austria invited managing directors from Austria's leading environmental technology companies to the “Green Tech Summit”. ecop Technologies GmbH CTO Bernhard Adler introduced the #RotationHeatPump ♻️ as a best practice and presented the results of the “Innovation” group. By far the most important point was the desire for better framework conditions for more speed in order to bring innovations to implementation much faster. 🔧 Optimizing with AM-technology 🔧 for more sustainable manufacturing 💙 Since 2006, Advansor in Brabrand has been rewriting the narrative regarding CO2. The company is a pioneer in sustainable climate solutions. Recently, Advansor participated in the Danish AM Hub project DfAM Green to fine-tune their technology for even greater environmental impact 🌱   Encountering a challenge with pressure loss in one of their ejectors, Advansor wanted to optimize efficiency and curb energy waste. Through the use of #AdditiveManufacturing, the team crafted compact yet robust components – a feature previously thought unattainable for high-pressure applications 💡   The result? Advansor achieved a remarkable 1% reduction in energy loss, translating to 70,000 kWh saved annually. Left this impressive conference uplifted by the broad consensus around the need for speed, scale, and simplicity for the competitive sustainability and resilience of Europe’s manufacturing base. The ramp up of capital-intensive cleantech manufacturing is tricky, and the government has an important role in enabling the long-term framework conditions that catalyze the needed private investment. It is cheaper to keep an industry in Europe in the first place than to attempt to reshore it once it has been lost, so the implementation of non-price criteria in auctions and public procurement calls will be key, among other things - we need to find the right balance between cheap, good, and fair. The EU is getting serious about how to decarbonize each sector and what it will take to get there - exploring avenues to support projects, such as the Sovereignty Seal, Auctions-as-a-Service, and new blended finance products such as public counter-guarantees to address working capital needs of cleantech manufacturing scale up. Very much enjoyed participating in the Green Fuels Talk at NCE Maritime CleanTech Cleantech’s Innovation Workshop on tech barriers today! Green ammonia is an important part of the energy mix required to decarbonise the maritime sector. Norway has a very good basis to become a leading producer of green ammonia and harvesting first mover advantages, and there is an urgent need for policy development to lead and drive the change to green. Important discussions on safety, market development and the need for government support.
