What can be more fascinating than getting to travel to different destinations as a part of a work trip and exploring all the corners of the globe? 🌍 This includes attending professional conferences such as Laracon EU in the wonderful weather of the Netherlands on the 5th and 6th of February. 📅   Here are a few things I've figured out till now while attending international conferences- ▪ Plan to minimize the impact of jet lag so you can learn and enjoy from day one. ▪ Meet different professionals from diverse backgrounds and gain insights into different cultures. ▪ Maximize your conference experience by actively participating in sessions, networking, and learning about new technologies and trends. ▪ Remember, you're representing your country so be vocal in a manner that displays the actual culture, rather than stereotypes.  ▪ Go out in the local areas outside your conference venue and understand the difference in cultures. Networking events are like Global village! When i was progressing to my professional phase of life, from my academic phase, I always thought these events were just events for all those Flashy corporations who had all the fancy clientele aka Big guns! However, once I began visiting these events, I realised they were gold mines ready to be explored!!! In my opinion, apart from all the business agendas, partnerships and meet-ups these events offer, here are a few other aspects that I have learned. - You get to meet people from different nationalities. - You gain knowledge of different technologies and sectors. - You gain confidence by talking to other people around you. - You get a load of Souvenirs! (this one’s my favorite!) 😜 P.S. Big thanks to MMGY Global for hosting another incredible DMO Mojo gathering in Boston! This being just my second year in attendance, DMO Mojo stands out as a unique gathering. It's a small yet powerful event filled with enlightening insights, meaningful conversations, and fantastic networking opportunities. In just a day and a half, I absorbed valuable lessons about our industry's successes, hurdles, and potential, all shared by passionate minds focused on our collective future. Kudos to the MMGY Global team for crafting such a thoughtful agenda, fostering engaging discussions, and ensuring every detail is spot on. (I'm a sucker for handwritten notes—they add a personal touch!) And despite enduring two full days of travel delays that turned my journey into quite the adventure, starting at 5 AM and ending at 11 PM three days later, every second was well worth it. Now, if you're not in the DMO industry, here's a key takeaway: While mega-conferences may have their allure, don't overlook the power of small, intimate gatherings in your field. These events offer deeper learning and stronger connections that can last a lifetime.

I’ve had a great week in Scotland: invited to speak at Scotland’s excellent National Events Conference (thank you EventScotland, Paul Bush OBE and Torquil Macleod), meeting up with some of the team at Glasgow Life where we are working on a review of their city event strategy, and fitting in just a little time for mountain biking in the Borders with Stuart Turner!   Scotland is a place that is rightly proud of what it has achieved in the events world: certainly not afraid to take on the big one-off events, while also holding a portfolio of world-famous recurring events. That’s not easy to do.   But even Scotland is not immune to the challenge of delivery costs rising at the same time as the public sector and attendees are feeling the financial squeeze.   Seb Coe, who was quoted this week, said the true test of character is when times are difficult, not when things go well. So we crack on!   It’s at times like this that we rightly revisit the strategic intent behind our events. Why are we really hosting events? Yes, we can generate economic return, but to really prove our value, what are we doing to shift social outcomes for people and place? It’s easy to get caught in the event mechanics of who, how and what, but if you get the why right then everything else hangs off it.   Thank you again Scotland: what a week.
