Betwixt and Between Loughborough Junction I was delighted, through Where Pathways Meet to celebrate 20 years of London Festival of Architecture by hosting an interactive walkshop and workshop last week exploring the residual urban spaces of Loughborough Junction (London Borough of Lambeth) with EcoResponsive Environments and studio 8FOLD Responding to this year’s festival theme ‘REIMAGINE’ – we #reimagined how some of the left over spaces that characterise a lot of our streets and housing estates could be envisioned as green and resilient spaces connecting people and nature – responding to the wider climate and ecological emergencies. Hosted by Meanwhile Space CIC (many thanks!) in the very inspiring LJ Works building (designed by ARCHITECTURE 00 ) which itself sits within Loughborough Farm. Both are very much exemplars of how left over spaces can be creatively repurposed to support communities and their wider social, natural and economic ecosystems. Our activities complemented lots of other creative community activities being hosted on the site as part of the festival. We managed to dodge the torrential June rain for our walkshop, and then returned to work with the beautiful models created for us by Studio 8 Fold’s work placement student Hassan (big thanks to him!). Many thanks also to the participants who joined us including the Loughborough Junction Action Group. Expo01 or RADICAL TRANSFORMATION of the building authorities. Imagine using a national Exhibition EXPO to rethink construction processes, approval procedures and innovative approaches to existing building fabric. Scenario; Biel EXPO 2001, the roofscape of the building of the Biel building authority is placed on the lake as a transformed pavilion. During the Expo, all debates concerning the transformation of existing buildings take place in the new free radical spatial structure derived from the original roofscape of the city's original building. The findings and transformations of the evolving lake pavillion will flow permanently into the "real" building in the city until it too is transformed and can fertilize the city with the new innovative approach to experimentation, space, content and urban scenarios. -City residents, civil servants, planning professionals, architects and designers begin to think more freely. -Building guidelines and specifications are redefined -Public space is reimagined -Existing roofscapes are finally given the freedom to unfold -Free spaces are allowed to be used and reoccupied, provided there is an idea. -New hybrid utilization concepts are created that have never been thought of before. -historical and new spatial structures reinforce each other through new dialogs of form and content. Architectures are created that can once again occupy a meta-level. -The education of architects and planners can gain new insights in which the focus is on the creative collaborative mind set of all those involved. We submitted the proposal for Expo Biel 2001 with RIEA, but it was rejected due to its "questionable radicalism" and failure to comply with the submission guidelines... At Retrospace, we believe architecture should honor tradition while serving contemporary needs. Our project with Al Jamea tus Saifiyah reflects this vision. Tasked with refurbishing their auditorium, we transformed the space into a versatile, multi-functional venue that caters to lectures, academic debates, and large-scale programs. A unique proposition was optimising the existing balcony structure and creating flexibility within the 300-seater auditorium. Our solution? Ingenious partitions that allow the hall to be divided into five distinct classrooms, each equipped with independently controlled lighting, AV systems, and climate control for meetings and lectures with discretion. These sound-insulated partitions were carefully designed for maximum efficiency, offering seamless transitions between various uses. These spaces could work in multiple configurations all at once. Given the Islamic heritage of Al Jamea tus Saifiyah, we incorporated subtle Fatimid architectural elements into the elevation, blending cultural richness with modern functionality. Day 16: Climate Action Driven by sustainable design and inspired by existing topography, the Pioneer and Crescent Hall student residences functions both as a place to rest and recover and as a wetland, surrounded by native landscape in a distinctive setting. This creates a habitat for nature and man-made elements to sensitively exist in a dynamic equilibrium. Built elements on stilts weave through structures seamlessly. Ponds and streams provide a perfect setting for outdoor classrooms, and student interactions at outdoor seating decks, gazebos, boardwalks and the open amphitheater. An experiential trail interweaves through lush natural landscape and strategically pause at various scenic points, and pavilions and breakout decks meant to provide reprieve to the goers and dwellers. Fusion of landscape and architecture creates a spatial symbiosis between man and nature, resulting in a nurturing holistic environment that strikes the perfect equilibrium between study and play, rest and rejuvenation. Sensible design strategy represents a unique opportunity to create a cohesive, inclusive and an immaculate oasis at the Student Residences, amidst a vibrant campus life. Studies have proven that classrooms with abundant glare-free natural light, fresh air and cross-ventilation, contribute to children’s overall health and well-being, and significantly improve their academic performance. So how can this be achieved through design? One promising solution is to move learning into outdoor environments. Flexibility in spaces is central to blurring boundaries and easing transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. That would mean, lectures and workshops could happen in shaded, open spaces such as courtyards and terraces. Excited to kick off the third teaching week with University of Oxford, Department for Continuing Education in collaboration with The King's Foundation on #UrbanDesign and #Placemaking. The preparations for this week involved delving into various insightful resources. One concept that resonated deeply is the significance of Place-making, particularly for #publicspaces, beyond mere aesthetics in urban design. Place-making is a transformative process, resulting in well-designed and vibrant spaces with meaning for those who use them—spaces ideally co-designed with the people involved. It extends beyond the physical, connecting it with emotions, memories, safety, people, and ideas of the #urban dwellers. #peopleincities #sustainableurbandevelopment #SDG11 #Reflecting on a past visit to #SanSalvador, I encountered a spacious, well-designed public area that remained largely empty on a sunny weekend day, with me as the sole occupant. This experience prompts contemplation on the potential reasons for such abandonment and how the concept of place-making could breathe life into similar spaces.

Urban Designers need to incorporate play into urbanism. It’s vitally important that our public spaces be designed for users of all ages. And, that includes creating non-park/playground space that is adaptable. Our streets, for example, are our primary North American public spaces. How might they be more accessible for youths? Also, Play does not always mean recreation; sometimes it can mean wonder and engagement. The focus of designing in this mode goes a long way towards creating spaces of inclusion and enjoyment. #todayspublicspace #cities #urbanism
