Digital Nomad Visa Project Manager @ Visit Estonia, enthusiastic about introducing & promoting Estonia as a remote work destination. Estonia – A Place That Works for You!
🌍 I'd love to call myself a Global Citizen or Digital Independent—who wouldn’t? 😊 But when it comes to #digitalnomadism, for me, it’s more of a lifestyle term. There are so many different types of nomads, but generally, it represents a lifestyle choice—traveling the world while being able to work independently of location. Most digital nomads are remote workers or entrepreneurs, but as Han mentioned in the original post, not all remote workers are digital nomads! I completely agree with Kaisu's comment that these terms become really important when we're doing academic research or working on policies that help this movement grow. In the second half of 2024, despite the progress we’ve made, we still don’t have a universal language to describe it all. And that’s a shame because it makes it harder to truly develop and understand this fast-evolving space, which in its most basic form represents a fundamental change in how people are able to work these days. This shift is transforming industries and creating new opportunities, but we need clearer language to address it more effectively and carve out new policies/services. Thanks again to Han for resurfacing this topic! It might seem basic, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how the community identifies itself, learning, and, if possible, adding my 2 cents. 💬

Does the term #DigitalNomad still resonate for me? 🫣 While if someone asks ‘are you a digital nomad’, I will answer yes (as I believe it’s currently the most palletible term for someone who works remotely and moves around frequently enough), I’ve found myself wanting to distance myself from that term for a while now 🙈 By definition, a digital nomad is someone who works online and travels around to various locations 💻 Which once upon a time I did, and I guess in the last week and a half is something I’ve done. However, when thinking about digital nomad visas and who they are made for, or when thinking about #DigitalNomadTourism strategies and what we’re actually trying to achieve in those conversations, somehow for me the term ‘digital nomad’ doesn’t fit the profile of the individuals and families we are trying to make these products for… 🙊 What *is* the best term, I’m not sure yet, we all have our versions of this - and perhaps I’m being picky at this point 😄 But I will say that not every remote worker is a digital nomad… so is this the best term? 🤔 📍Göreme, Cappadocia 🇹🇷 #RemoteLife

Buon venerdì from Firenze! Be sure to understand the Italian tax implications for this visa. There are incentives to manage the high federal Italian tax rates (starting at 23% to 43% for income €55K and above). Italy considers most living in Italy 183 or more a year a tax resident and taxes on one’s worldwide income. (Depending on your maximum income, the US does not double tax. ) You file Italian taxes first and then US taxes. I definitely recommend consulting with a tax professional experienced in US and Italian tax rules/filing options BEFORE you consider applying for this visa. As a resident of Italy with a carta di soggiorno, due to my marriage to an Italian citizen, I do not need a visa to live or work in Italy or the EU; however, I do want take advantage of tax breaks for digital nomadic workers or new workers in Italy.
🚨BIG NEWS: Italy has introduced its digital nomad visa for non-EU citizens! 🇮🇹 If you’re employed and earn €28,000 or more annually, you can now work remotely in Italy. The visa allows for a year-long stay with renewal options, and the best part? Families can join too, offering the ultimate work-life balance in your chosen location. Kudos to Italy for presenting an exciting opportunity for global professionals seeking flexibility! 🥳 Remote work is the future, empowering individuals to contribute from anywhere while enjoying Italy's unique charm. Learn more about the visa at the link in the comments.
