#RESTORE4Cs 4th General Assembly in Valencia Coastal wetlands not only offer heavens for 🦅 🐟 🦗 and protection from 🌊, they also play an important role in the carbon cycle and the mitigation of climate change. But how do the type and status of coastal wetlands alter their carbon uptake and emissions? And how can satellite data help assess this? These are some of the questions that the #RESTORE4Cs are addressing, and that we discussed last week as partners met for the 4th general assembly in Valencia. Thanks to the dedicated organizers at the University of Valencia, we also had the opportunity to visit the Majal de Moros wetland and the Albufera lake! These beautiful places feature preserved, altered and restored costal ecosystems which will help respond to our questions.

#ForestMonitor Germany is now available in English! As requested by many users, Naturwald Akademie gGmbH and Remote Sensing Solutions GmbH are finally providing an English version of the Forest Monitor for Germany: https://lnkd.in/d_2GndqK The Forest Monitor Germany provides a satellite-based assessment of the forest condition, a map of the dominant tree species, as well as recent active fires. This week, RSS joined all the #OurMED partners in the Sebou basin in Morocco, to discuss progress and next steps for sustainable water storage and distribution in the Mediterranean region. Our thanks go to #LivingPlanetMorocco for the organization of the successful meeting, including a field trip to Ifrane National Park! It was very interesting to learn about the ongoing work with apple farmers, to improve water use efficiency in order to reduce water withdrawals and eventually restore the dried-out Dayet Aoua lake. Remote sensing can help evaluate the impact of these efforts. Below you find a satellite view of the lake in 1990 and in 2024, emphasizing the need for action! #WetlandRestoration #Copernicus

Earth Observation supports the #energytransition in various aspects. How this can be scaled and how further awareness of these valuable data sources can be raised, was discussed at ESA Commercialisation Gateway Space Forum for #GreenEnergy the last two days in Paris. RSS joined an interesting panel with Declan K., Rainer Malmberg , and Marie Nicod moderated by Beatrice Barresi, in which we highlighted our solutions to support the planning of the energy transition and what the challenges are for operationalisation of EO in the energy sector.

#RenewableElectricity for 20,000 off-grid consumers in Africa! 🌍💡 We are pleased to share that RSS is partner in the ambitiuos #RePower project to illuminate the future of renewable energy and rural electrification! Funded by the European Union with a total project cost of approximately 12.7 million euros, RePower aims to significantly enhance the penetration of renewable energy through innovative plug-and-play #microgrids. With the EU contributing up to 9.9 million euros, RePower stands as a testament to Europe's commitment to sustainable energy and global development. RePower will empower African off-grid communities to drive their own development through the productive use of energy, transcending traditional electrification methods to foster genuine economic growth. The project will see the installation of advanced microgrids in Madagascar, Niger, Senegal, and a replication site in Ghana, with the goal of providing electricity to 20,000 off-grid consumers by 2027. Happy World Water Day! 💙 Just as water runs through every aspect of life, it also runs through many of our projects. With the help of Earth Observation, RSS provides timely information on water-related ecosystems such as wetlands, including information on water quantity and quality. This type of information is essential to sustainably manage the resource, and to assess and mitigate risks from flooding, drought and water shortages. 💦 One example is the Sidi Salem Dam, located in Tunisia on the transboundary Medjerda river, where we track the changes in water extent month by month for water managers #OurMED. https://lnkd.in/eBgHPmeK 💦 Equally important is information about changes in ecosystems that store and purify water, such as wetlands (including peatlands) and forests. #REWET #WaldmonitorDeutschland 💦 This year, the United Nations focuses on water for peace. Tensions can rise between communities when water is scarce. In the Sahel region, conflicts are often seen between resident farmers and nomad herders that move their animals with the season, in search for grazing areas and water.
