The world's largest tropical peatland complex is in the central Congo Basin 🌍🏞️ UNEP-WCMC is part of the CongoPeat scientific programme to better understand this ecosystem. An accessible summary of 5 years of research has been published and here are some key findings: 1. The peatlands store 29 billion metric tons of carbon 2. They are a refuge for wildlife, and many species have not yet been identified 3. They are also threatened by land-use change: logging, oil exploration and drainage for agriculture Read about the research in full here: https://lnkd.in/d55ZBfdv

The team of the Prec-Farm lab, Department of Geography - University of the Aegean, is pleased to announce that according to soil analyses carried out in the framework of the Soil O-live project (funded by the EU (Horizon Europe)), four olive groves in Lesvos have been ranked among the first in terms of soil health in Europe. Soil health has been recognised by the EU as an absolute priority to address the consequences of climate change and soil degradation, but also as very important for ensuring food security. Out of a total of 52 olive groves from the main olive producing countries of the Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco), the olive groves of Lesvos were ranked first, second, fifth and sixth. It is worth noting that their management practices are environmentally friendly to varying degrees of intensity, indicating that there are many different management practices that have positive effects on the soil. #SoilOlive #EuropeanCommission #SoilMission #HorizonEurope #aegeanuniversity

Underpinning the global ocean economy are the natural resources and ecological systems that function as the ocean economy’s natural capital asset base. Natural capital includes: (a) living resources (renewable stocks) harvested for use, such as fisheries; (b) nonliving resources (nonrenewable stocks) harvested for use, such as seabed minerals; and (c) ecosystems and ecosystem processes that consist of interaction between the living and nonliving environment as a functional unit (coral reef ecosystems, mangrove ecosystems, and so on). (World Bank Full Report) Mangrove caught my attention since it's the Caribbean oyster habitat Josh Neese

🌳 The Resources for Tree Planting Platform explains how to source good quality tree planting material for growers carrying out land restoration, agroforestry, plantation establishment, and other tree planting activities. The resources on the Platform are mostly practical ‘how to’ guidelines for extension workers, tree seed collectors, nursery operators, and tree growers. The mangrove forest is an essential coastal wetland ecosystem with high primary productivity in the tropical and subtropical intertidal zones and serves as an essential global carbon sink. In collaboration with Prof Zhijun Dai, we conducted a machine Learning-Based examination of recent mangrove forest changes in the western Irrawaddy River Delta, Southeast Asia. https://lnkd.in/gFECmP8b
