Hi, I'm Dan Christiansen, I'm an additive manufacturing engineer with Relativity Space, and since you asked, I'd love to hear more about the powdering. How do you make sure there's not even a speck of dust and a small enclosed fuel passage? Alright, let's get into it. For a bit of context, the majority of our parts on our engine are produced via laser powder bed fusion. This process involves producing a part using a laser and a big VAT of metal powder. During and after the print, the parts are fully submerged in metal. Water and this includes all the empty space around the part as well as the internal fuel manifolds and channels. First, we work with the design analyst teams to create a part that can be powdered easily. This includes having evacuation holes for powder to flow out as well As for borescope cameras to move in to inspect afterwards. Next, we decide how clean the part needs to be and this allows us to establish a specification for cleanliness. This quantifies exactly how the clean the part needs to be depending on the end use application. Lastly, when the print is complete, we use a number of techniques. To remove the powder from the part. This includes specialty metal powder vacuums that suck the powder up and recondition it for use in future prints. We have robotic shaker tables that invert the part and shake it to get the last little bit of powder out. Like you're trying to get the last bit of ketchup out of the bottle. The part and then move on to precision cleaning steps and an ultrasonic bath and eventually move on to assembly into our engine for testing.
