I have just finished an online session on "Active Listening - Communication Skills" organized by Academy of Pharmaceutical Affairs (APA) and presented by Dr. Adham El Said.   During the session, we explored the importance of active listening and how it can significantly impact our personal and professional relationships. We also discussed the difference between listening and hearing, and what makes you a good listener (verbal & non-verbal signs). There are 4 different listening styles: People oriented, Task oriented, Content oriented & Time oriented. 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬? ❓❓❓ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 ... 𝒊𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒔! 🤔Many of my clients have noticed that Americans don't always ask a question directly, and they wonder if direct questions sound too blunt, or even rude. 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥. We use direct questions in our everyday conversations with family, friends, and people we know well. They typically use fewer words, and they always end with a question mark. Here are some examples: What time is it? Where are you going? Do you like coffee? There's nothing wrong with these questions, but if you are in a context that requires politeness, you should use an indirect question. 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. ⭐NOTE!!! With indirect questions, the word order changes. Here's how to change a direct question into an indirect question: 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭: Why was she late? 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭: Can you tell me why she was late? 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭: Do you happen to know why she was late? 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭: What time is it? 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭: Could you (please) tell me what time it is? 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭: I wonder if you could tell me what time it is. 🗝️ The key difference is that a direct question always has a question mark, but an indirect question is embedded inside another question or statement. Would you like to master the Art of English Speaking?    I think speaking in any language can be the most difficult part but it all depends on how you look at it. It could be a challenge or even FUN. I think of English as a tree that grows and grows and it got roots to give it all the necessary elements for this process. So, what are your elements of an English tree? They are words and if we talk for advanced levels you can discover words but actually not new words, they come from the roots of other words that you already know. How? By adding a prefix at the beginning to a word or a suffix at the end of a word you can create more words with different meanings.
