"The prevailing narrative, which focuses on individuals, treats traumatized people as psychologically abnormal, rather than as having a normal reaction to abnormal circumstances." This is an incomplete way to view trauma, and is harmful--"it places the responsibility for the harm and the burden of healing from it on the individual rather than the system." Seeing it as a systems problem can help us truly address trauma on a broader scale. Thanks Stanford Social Innovation Review and Laura Calderon de la Barca, Katherine Milligan and John Kania for the article, and Jennifer Zelmer for sharing it so it showed up in my feed!

In the joint effort to improve representation in clinical trials, CROs play a vital role. The future of #healthequity is the shared responsibility of both sponsors and CROs, and there are many challenges to overcome. In a recent interview with Daniel Perez, Global Head of Health Equity Strategy for Worldwide Clinical Trials, he called out the stigma still associated with mental health, for example. Black Americans are a commonly underserved group that disproportionately ends up in emergency rooms and are simply assigned an ICD-10 code regarding mental health conditions. There are many factors like this that can impact the pre-screening that CROs conduct, and Perez shared examples of how to improve it. Learn more by reading the blog post: https://hubs.la/Q02Fgl_y0

When S&PAA started out, few people spoke of “schizophrenia” and “recovery” in the same sentence – and we found this unacceptable. With your support, we have been committed to making recovery possible for millions of people with schizophrenia – and today, meaningful, functional recovery is not only possible, it is achievable. With proper diagnosis and care, a person living with schizophrenia can go back to school. Have a job. Cook dinner. Enjoy time with friends. Not just live, but thrive.
