I’m writing this at 00:23 am. I just got back from a run. My easy 16 km (10 miles) accidentally turned into 28 km (17.3 miles) which meant that I got back much later than anticipated (and I had a lot more time to think 😅) Your first thought might be: “Pat. You’re a bit delulu.” Fair. I could get defensive about it, but you’re probably right 🤷♀️ ‼️ But what I will say is that your *actual first thought* should have been: ❓❓❓ “Where did you run that you can safely be outside alone as a woman 8:30pm-12am?” Yeah. I know. The answer: Zagreb, Croatia 🇭🇷 I spent 22-25 km thinking about this and sinking into gratitude about the fact that 🏃♀️ It is safe for me to be outside alone altogether 🎧 I can listen to music with both AirPods in and ⚠️ without having to constantly check my surroundings for possible danger. I know that this is not the reality for the majority of women. It’s such a huge issue that a lot of women don’t pick up the sport *due to this reason*. ➡️ They can’t make it work while the sun is up (work, kids, life) and before or after it’s not safe anymore. It should not be like that. Now, it is far from my expertise to preach city governments to sort out crime… Or public education and parents to raise better humans… But until the root cause is fixed, here are some things companies and people could do to support women picking up running: 💻 Companies: offer flexibility for taking longer lunch breaks or shift working hours so women/people can catch the daylight for a run. 🏃♀️ And for all runners who feel unsafe, this is what I did (even though I knew that I was running in one of the safest cities in Europe): 💡 I always ran on roads with street lights (it actually extended my run) 📍 I shared my live location with my partner 📱 I knew exactly who to text and what to do should something feel off (emergency numbers, friends living in the area, going live on IG) From km 15-18 onwards I wouldn’t have had the legs and stamina to run away from any situation. Even with my running shoes on. ❗️I really just wanted to spread a little more awareness about the (lack of) safety of female runners - AND any other runners who feel unsafe running in the dark. Celebrating our 15th year at Hatch is an achievement I am very proud of. I can 100% say that all past and of course the present talented Hatchlings have all played their part in growing our brand, our offer and delivering for clients. Importantly though, we have also managed to have some fun along the way. I could say it's all been 'plane sailing' and how easy it is driving the business forward. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, last year was a really tough trading year for Hatch. There were multiple reasons for this, but for the most part it felt like brands were being cautious to invest against the backdrop of inflation and the cost of living crisis. I am sure some will blindly say everything is great all the time to keep appearances, but surely a bit of honesty goes a long way with your team and network. I know many suffered last year and I’m convinced our industry could have told everyone we were in a recession before the official technical figures were released! This was especially true in the first six months of 2023 for Hatch. However, I believe the sign of a good business is when things are tighter the team pull together, you focus on your talents and reinvigorate your offer. I am so proud of the team and the Board at Hatch, as the second half of 2023 saw us do just that, and we battled our way into a positive end to 2023. What’s more encouraging is this fight and desire has translated to an even stronger start to 2024, and based on the first three months of the year we are in for our best year yet. So I suppose the purpose of this post is really to celebrate talent in your team and to flag that business is always a roller coaster. If you are focused and engage the team, sometimes a little market challenge to ongoing growth can pay dividends. Headlines matter. The bold ones catch our attention. One that caught my eye today promised a bonus for running more - too good to be true, right? But maybe not. As someone in marketing, I know the importance of getting people to read content with eye catching headlines. And as a runner, I can attest to the benefits of running- feeling great, motivated, confident, and healthy. Plus, as the chairman of this company said "my business can only endure if my employees are healthy." So why not start running today? Trust me, it's true - running can enrich your life in so many ways. Even without a bonus (although I would take it).

✍ 'Step into the zone of awkward team building and tough presentations – they do pay off' | Writes Helena Morrissey I recently surprised everyone who knows me by joining in an indoor skydiving “team-building” #activity at a company I chair. I should clarify that the indoor version is nothing like actual skydiving – instead of leaping from a plane, I hovered a mere few feet off the ground in a wind tunnel, aided by an instructor. Even so, I was well beyond my comfort zone, nervous about making a complete idiot of myself, especially in front of 25 #colleagues – most of whom I’d only met earlier the same day. But I am so glad I did it. My technique was lousy, but the satisfaction of overcoming my fear, combined with bonding with new (and in some cases, equally terrified) colleagues outweighed any embarrassment. #TeamBuilding antics aside, we need to be willing to step outside our comfort zone at work if we’re to #progress in our careers, whether we’re in our 20s or 50s. I’m currently in my ParkRun era - and it’s working wonders for my mindset and approach to business ✨ My original ParkRun era started 5 years ago… I ran my first ParkRun in Thurrock with a time of 32:01, and soon got a 28:46 PB at Great Notley but then COVID hit. Parkruns were off and I lost the bug… Until last August, I decided to get back into the ParkRuns. My first run back was a time of 35:32 and I was NOT happy 👀 I get it - I’m 5 years older, approx 2 stone heavier, and not regularly exercising at all. So I decided to commit to getting better. And within the month, I was back at a 32:30 time for my Chelmsford PB 💪🏻 Thinking how easy it had been to get from 35 down to 32, I thought it would be a breeze to get to my previous sub-30 time… I couldn’t be more wrong. It took another 11 Chelmsford ParkRuns before I got my next PB. I was making a lot of mistakes like running too hard at the start. My body wasn’t finding the 5km easy, and I had to include short walks in the middle. And I also kept telling myself this was hard, that I couldn’t do it… Until I had a 3 week break and in late January 2024, I smashed a PB of 31:42… without even trying! It didn’t take as long for the next PB, and 6 ParkRuns later, I was at 31:02 🙌🏻 and again, I hadn’t been trying. I realised that every time I *tried* to get a PB, when I set my intention too strongly, focussed on “chasing the pacer” and let that desire to beat my best get too strong, that it overrode my focus on technique. I forgot what it really took to get a PB! Which brings me onto last week’s run - I wasn’t feeling it (yet again). But 1km into the run, I knew what I was here for. And lo and behold, PB number 5 rolled in 4 weeks after the last, with a time of 30:04 💪🏻 So what’s all this got to do with mindset business? Well, I realised I was in my own way for most of the earlier runs to date - limiting what I thought I could do because of my thoughts, and physically by not focussing on the right things. I’ve also seen the benefit of slow, steady, consistent action, that’s focussed on a particular goal to beat myself, and that tracking the progress over time is what I love to see. And all of that reminds me of the stuff I know I need to do in business. Because it’s “a marathon not a sprint”. The early, slow, consistent actions at the start have their pay off later down the line. The 1%s matter. And that there’s only certain 1%s that you can control, whilst there’s a whole bunch of others you can’t. Business building is tough - running is tough. And both push me mentally to challenge myself, stay consistent and committed, and keep the slow and steady action that help me move towards goals I’m motivated about 💪🏻 Plus, more often than not, I should probably do the thing I say I “don’t want to do” as it gets me better results 😅 Who else loves a ParkRun, and what’s your best learning/achievement from it to date?!

How has it been moving to Greenland? (Story 2: The Work Version) Leaving the world’s most reputable company (yes, The LEGO Group has actually won that title numerous times) and stepping into a globally unknown company might not make sense to everyone. I’ll forever cherish the time at The LEGO Group and at the same time I’m extremely happy about the decision to join Tusass A/S as Head of Communication, Product Development, and Marketing. Here’s why I’m happy about the decision: 🚁 The timing for taking on this position is excellent. A new strategy is being formed. Simultaneously, we are planning all our new brand activities. 🕵️To do well, we have prioritised spending time with customers. A team member and I have just returned from a trip to northern Greenland with the purpose of collecting insights about their needs and experiences. Time extremely well spent. The downside of visiting customers is the carbon footprint and the cost (Tusass is owned by society) - two big dilemmas and something I don’t take lightly. 👩🌾 The team I lead is an awesome group of people. I have never before led such a young team (Gen Zs and young Millennials). It’s no surprise that they are super clever, witty, and brave 🔥 We have so many things we aspire to do and change. A significant leadership task is to ensure the change load is sustainable. 🇬🇱 The level of business complexity is astounding. We are operating in a country with less than 57,000 inhabitants. No cities are connected by roads. Part of the market is monopolistic and part is competitive. Fortunately, I find complexity really exciting 😅 🩳 The overall design principle for everything I do: Life is short. To get the most out of it, taking leaps is a necessity. Turns out, I'm not the only finance enthusiast who loves to RUN🏃 If you didn't see my post on Tuesday, we're starting a running club We've called it, 'Running the Numbers' (pun intended! 😉) My thinking was, why not combine forces for some post-work de-stressing and number-crunching camaraderie? I'm relatively new to running (been at it for about 6 months), but the benefits are off the charts! I've found it an awesome way to socialise (which I am not great at outside of work) But it's also been a game-changer for my general well-being and mental health. Seriously, it has worked like medicine, so I am keen to promote the sport to others. All you need is some trainers! Our mission? To create a community where finance enthusiasts can enjoy the perks of running together. Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or just finding your stride, you're welcome here! Here's the plan (still ironing out the details): 🏃♂️We'll kick things off with casual meet-ups (just 10-15 mins), probably before parkrun at Southampton Common (one of the UK's largest Parkrun spots!). 🏃♀️All levels are welcome (friends and other finance enthusiast welcome)! 🏃Depending on interest, we might tour other Parkrun locations, organise after-work runs, or even set team Strava challenges? 🏃♂️ It will be uber casual - no heavy commitments and will never be monetised. Whilst writing this I feel a mixture of emotions. Thankfulness, reflection and new happiness, for 8 years I had the privilege of working at Spinningfields in Manchester. As a teenager it was a place that was so cool! I loved the new buildings, shops, events, values, morals, culture, estate’s beauty and most importantly, all the incredible people I met on my journey. My journey was one that surprised myself, starting as a cleaner in 3 Hardman Street, I soon got an opportunity to join the security team, eventually working through ranks to become an Operational Manager. Each step was a learning experience, filled with great moments and memories and a sense of accomplishment. I was passionate about my work and driven to push myself to the highest possible level for my career there. I genuinely couldn’t see myself leaving! However, life often has its twists and turns. Parting ways was a hard decision, yet it was necessary for my personal growth. It was a period of introspection and admittedly healing. Today, I am happy to share that I have found a new home. A place that values my contributions. I've regained my smile, my confidence is stronger than ever and I am once again excited about the future. This journey has taught me the impact leadership can have on a business's values and culture. It has shown me the importance of making sure personal values align with those of your workplace and the strength required to make tough decisions for your happiness. To my colleagues at Spinningfields, thank you for the memories, the lessons, laughs and the friendship. To my new team, thank you for welcoming me with open arms, reigniting my passion and for reminding me of the joys work can bring.
